introducing the kawaii alphabet stitching club!

It's time for another Wild Olive Stitching Club! And if you love my kawaii style, you're going to love this one. The Kawaii Alphabet Stitching Club features 26 super cute embroidery patterns and a unique English paper piecing pattern to make a lap quilt.

Everything in this is about super cute stitching and connecting with a group of fellow stitchers as you craft something special. More than any of my clubs before, I'm not showing off the patterns so it can be a surprise for those who like the mystery. But I have plenty of information for you and you can always ask if you have questions!

Embroidery

Embroidery is the heart of the project and it's what ties everything together. The theme is kawaii alphabet, which means super cute objects and animals that represent the ABCs (of the English alphabet). Many of the designs are iconic of the Japanese kawaii aesthetic, but they are all things that you'll recognize in one way or another. The patterns are a secret until they are released each week, but there are a few sneak peeks that lurk around here...

The patterns all have their accompanying letter as part of the design, along with some cute little elements all around. They're larger than most of the stitching club patterns I've made before (about 3-4 inches), but they're still fairly quick to stitch up. The size also makes them ideal for embroidering other projects that aren't part of the quilt that we're making.

When starting this project, it's best to know a few basic embroidery stitches.

English Paper Piecing

If embroidery ties everything together, English paper piecing or EPP is what literally holds everything together. This technique involves attaching fabric to cardstock templates. Those templates make it easier to put everything together...without a sewing machine! Each alphabet pattern becomes part of the larger hand-stitched project. A lap quilt, to be precise. You could make it into a giant wall hanging in child's bedroom or you can actually use it while cuddled up on the couch and watching something super cute!

Hand sewing a quilt together isn't a fast process, but EPP makes it easy, precise, and portable. The shapes are a mix of hexagons, squares, and a special shape that's like a skewed hexagon. Mine is made with kawaii, candy-colored solids, but you can use any fabrics you like. One person suggested to me that the large pieces would be great for showing off some of the larger scale prints that don't always work for English paper piecing!

And it's okay if you've never tried EPP before, because I'll show you the basics!

Community

This is a stitching CLUB, not just a project. When you sign up, you get patterns and tutorials, but you also get to connect with others who are stitching along. And thanks to a new site where I'm hosting the club, that will be easier than ever. Club members can comment and interact, as well as upload images of their progress.

There's no pressure to participate or interact, and you don't even need to stitch at a set pace. But connecting with others can really help you stay on track to finish your project!

If you've never done one of my stitching clubs before, here's what you can expect:

• New pattern PDF released every Monday while the class runs (if you join after the start, you'll instantly have all the previously released patterns and content).
• Printable templates for the English paper piecing (available as soon as you join)
• English paper piecing instructions
• Lap quilt finishing instructions
• Kind folks who love stitching cute things as much as you do

If you've done one of my stitching clubs before, you can also expect these new features:

• An online portal to access everything all in one place (no hunting for all the emails!)
• Video tutorials along with written instructions
• A private community to interact with other club members and share your photos

The entire club lasts for about six months because that's how long it will take to get through the alphabet with one letter a week. I've set it up this way so you can work on the embroidery and EPP week by week at an easy pace. That means we'll be finishing in November, with just enough time to catch up (if needed!) by the end of the year and gift-giving season. But also, it's completely okay to let this take longer than the six months. You'll be able to come back to the patterns and tutorials after the club ends.

I definitely had a plan to finish stitching my November Kawaii Crossing pattern before starting on December, and that the whole thing would be done by now. Guess what! That didn't happen!

And when I went to take this photo I realized just how many things I have around that are evidence of why I haven't finished this yet. And it's okay. If you are in the same boat as I am and you haven't finished stitching this or a hundred other things, I'm here to say it's okay. Make things when you can and enjoy the process.

But wanting to give you a fighting chance at finishing your Kawaii Crossing street before 2021, I'm here to deliver the last patterns for both embroidery and cross stitch!

   

This will fit into the last spot on the street, with flowers next to it. If you haven't stitched those yet (you'll see them on the full pattern), you could add some extra Christmas trees so it looks like a fuller tree lot.

For the embroidery version, I suggest using a thicker stitch like chain stitch for the posts holding the lights, and maybe even for the tree trunks. You'll see that shown in the color version in the PDF!

And now I need to get back to more stitching that isn't this project. But eventually (maybe early January), I'll finish mine and will post a photo here! Speaking of January, I need to make a decision about what fun year-long project to do next...

Pardon our dust! The Kawaii Crossing construction crew hasn't built the coffee shop on my street just yet. In fact, the road crew isn't even finished. Things just take longer in 2020.

Seriously though, my stitching has taken a back seat to, well, other stitching.

But I can't let you wait any longer! So enjoy this holiday cup coffee shop. I promise you they sell your favorite winter coffee, tea, or hot cocoa flavor!



On its own, the drive-thru portion looks a little odd. When set in the complete town street scene, you get some grass and pavement that makes more sense. But all these on their own have been just the building with no grass and I thrive on consistency!

introducing the 2020 holiday stitching club

Days like today always get me excited. Why, you ask? Because I have a new stitching club to share with you. It's filled with embroidery, English paper piecing, and Christmas!

Five years ago I released the Holiday Stitching Club and dated it 2015, planning to release more...maybe each year. You may have noticed that didn't exactly happen. Sure, I've released Christmas patterns since then, and even some that were stitching clubs of sorts, but not the embroidery/EPP combination I love.

This year, that needed to change, so I present to you, Wild Olive's 2020 Holiday Stitching Club!



Unlike my previous clubs, this one is coming to you all at once. No need to wait for an email each week because you can jump right in with all the patterns! Of course, you can work on a design each week, stretch it out longer, or zip right through it. The choice is up to you!

But here's the basic idea: four Christmas characters as embroidery patterns, and each of them fits inside an EPP snow globe, and they all come together as a mini quilt.



The complete PDF includes a materials list, tips, basic assembly instructions, printable EPP templates, and embroidery patterns. It doesn't go into the specifics of how to embroidery or do English paper piecing and other quilting skills. 

If you've done any of my clubs before, you already know what you need to know. I'm also planning to create videos showing more of these basic skills, hopefully a few of those will be coming along even as you start to stitch your project!



I'll also be hosting a stitch-a-long on Instagram so you can still work week by week on this like my other clubs. Because the community and connecting with others is half the fun!

I'm just gonna say it. I love this happy coffee shop embroidery pattern. I think it's important to care about the things you make, but sometimes I care more than other times. A smiling coffee shop that looks like a red holiday cup will always win me over. Even if I'm saying that about my own work!

In my previous post I mentioned that I'm not 100% sure how it will go stitching this little car, but I think this would also work well without the car. Then it's just the coffee shop without a drive through, but still looking oh so cute.

But of course, if you want to go big...like, embroider on a candy bag big, you'll get lots of of those details looking amazing. And I really think a bag or even a banner/flag would be a fun thing for this year or the future.

This month's Kawaii Crossing shop is filled with spooky costumes for Halloween, and now it's time to cross stitch this happy little costumier! Can you believe that with this we now have ten shops on the streets of this super cute town? I can't. Maybe it's because it's been so much fun to stitch this little by little with you.

Technically mine isn't entirely finished as you can see from the street, but it's almost there. If I'm smart I'll work in some time to just stitch the rest of the street for the last two shops before I even dig too far into the next design, which I'm super energized about (that may be a slight hint at what that will be).



Putting costume pieces in the window of this shop was tricky for cross stitch. I mean, these designs are just 30x30, so there's not a lot of room for details that are done in cross stitch squares. But I think you can still tell that it's a Frankenstein's monster and a witch hat, right? Humor me. And also please ignore that stray guinea pig hair on my work.

The bats are also so tiny that they don't even get mouths. It's for the best because we don't want any vampire bats coming for you with their little fangs!

This one has a fair number of tiny details, so when you're working on the items in the window and the little bell on the door, you'll definitely want to use only one or two strands. Yes, that tiny! At least for the small version. 

I also couldn't resist including those little bats. Again, tiny stitches here, but that's part of the charm of this.

Who's ready to visit their local yarn shop? Even better, who's ready to cross stitch the cutest LYS ever? It's time to pull out your growing Kawaii Crossing streets and add this new pattern to the third row. 

This one was a lot of fun to make and stitch, and I especially love the stack of colorful yarn in the front window. 



And here's where I am with mine. I didn't quite catch up on last month's pattern yet, so the town's stationer isn't there yet. Well, I've added some stitches there since I took this photo, but it's nowhere near done. Maybe by the next time you see this!

I just had to do a side-view close up on this one, and show off my needle minder in the process. This enamel hexagon from Cloud Craft has been my go-to for the whole Kawaii Crossing cross stitch project.

This month's Kawaii Crossing shop (and free embroidery pattern!) is a little yarn shop. I LOVE yarn and I'm excited to share this design and the matching cross stitch pattern soon. I mean, who wouldn't want to shop here? 

If you're a knitter AND a stitcher, I think you'll love another project I've been working on this month to go along with our little yarn shop. Obviously, it HAD to include yarn!

Also if you're a knitter or a crocheter wouldn't this be adorable embroidered on a project bag? I have two bag designs I've made and regularly use that would work with this pattern stitched on the side: a snap-top project bag and a drawstring bag that's ideal for socks. The large version of the pattern is good for this.

Of course, you could also make a little charm to attach to your favorite project bag. Kind of like a clip-on keychain! Use the mini version for this option.

For my cross stitch friends, I'm stitching more road right now and will have the chart ready to share soon. So many exciting things to make!

Who's ready to cross stitch a stationery shop? If you've been following along with the Kawaii Crossing Wild Olive Stitching Club, you probably notice that this month's post looks a little different. And you may have also guessed that, well, I haven't stitched this little composition book-shaped store! 

I've been keeping up with the stitching this year SO WELL, even with cross stitch, which I'm notoriously slow at. But I'm giving up on this month because we have a lot of life happening over here. Not giving up, actually. Giving myself margin. And I know you wonderful folks will understand!

Who's ready to embroider a cute little stationer for the Kawaii Crossing street? (If you think that's a typo like my spell check does, I promise that "stationer" is a word and it's a fancy way to say stationery shop!). Since this shop looks like a composition book, I kind of imagine that the wallpaper in this happy little store has light blue lines like the paper inside a notebook.

Also, because all these patterns I've been drawing are straight-on views, I often think of them as only that. But today I definitely pictured this one as a long, thin shop like many you find in downtown locations. I can imagine myself walking along and testing the pens and trying to limit myself to only a few rolls of tape. What would you want to buy from the stationer?

I'm super happy to share another Kawaii Crossing cross stitch pattern and this time it's the bunting emporium! Of course, like every pattern in this series, this is a free chart that's part of my year-long stitch-a-long.

Now, I've never really encountered a bunting emporium, but I'd like to think that it would be pretty much magnificent. In my imagining of it, they sell bunting (both of the American and British variety), garlands, flags, banners, and more. Certainly, it would be festive.



I also love making garlands just because, and I am gonna try my hardest to still make a printable bunting this month. If that doesn't happen, I'd highly recommend checking out the book Banners, Buntings, Garlands & Pennants, which has a few projects from yours truly.

I started this year with the plan to make a set of flags or buntings with these little Kawaii Crossing shops stitched on them. It never really happened, but if it had, I'd be very excited about embroidering this little bunting emporium on a bunting. I mean, wouldn't that be adorable?

Even now I'm thinking that stitching the large version of this pattern (and maybe even making it larger still) on a single bunting flag like the one in the emporium window would be so cute. 

Alas, I'm working on the cross stitch version for my "actually stitch the thing" project this time around, but perhaps someday.

I kind love this shell-shaped shop, and maybe because it's fun to say. But also because it reminds me a litte bit of Spongebob Squarepants and the cheesy souvenir stores you find on warm-weather vacations. Do I typically buy things there? No. Do I enjoy perusing the odd mix of items they sell? Yes.

And I hope you enjoy stitching this curious little shop and adding it to your collection of Kawaii Crossing patterns.

I'm very happy to share with you, at long last, the beach shop cross stitch pattern! As always, this is free for you to enjoy and add to your growing town. The embroidery version is coming this week, I promise!

When I shared my beach shop illustration for this month's Kawaii Crossing addition, I mentioned that I'm not a beach gal. Pools are more my thing, but with a history of melanoma, I still have to stay safe and when it comes to the sun. All of that said, right now I could really go for a big adorondac chair on the deck of a beach house with a giant umbrella, and an iced tea in my hand as I watch people surf and play in the sand.



Instead, we'll just have to stitch, which can feel like a little vacation (or staycation!) of its own.

When I chose the colors for this whole big project, I didn't take into account how similar the lavendar shades are when you stitch them next to each other. That means that the definition on the shell is subtle if you use the colors in the chart. I opted to leave them that way in the chart because I didn't want to suddenly add more colors, but if you want to make yours stand out more, use a darker purple. I'd suggest working with DMC 208 in place of 209 in this one.

Also, I maaaaayyy have stitched mine wrong when it comes to where the bottom of the shop meets the grass. Ignore the photos and go with what's on the chart.

summer reading stitching club registration

Summer is here and that means it's time for Summer Reading Stitching Club! When you were growing up, or maybe even as an adult, did you participate in a summer reading club at your local library? I LOVED it as a kid and I'm bringing that to my new Wild Olive Stitching Club.

This year, summer reading clubs will feel different in many communities, but that doesn't mean we can't have our own version online...with embroidery and English paper piecing! I chose 12 classic children's books to embroider on little hand-pieced books, which will then become a quilted book bag. If you'd rather, you could also make them into a mini quilt.




Each week, club members will receive an embroidery pattern PDF by email, along with some other fun along the way. The patterns represent key elements or characters from books, but the books will be a surprise each time (though you can probably guess a few from the photos!). Taking a cue from illustrated classics, these patterns are all stitched in a single color. It makes stitching them fast and easy while giving them a bold look!





Summer Reading Stitching Club combines several needlecrafts that I love. Embroidery (all simple stitches), English paper piecing (all the instructions come with the club), and sewing (all straight seams, but it will help if you know your way 'round a sewing machine).

If you've ever done one of my paid stitching clubs in the past, you'll be familiar with the process and format of this club. The Summer Reading Stitching Club will run from June 2 to August 25. That's 12 weeks of patterns, plus time for finishing.

When you sign up, you'll get a PDF welcome kit with a supply list, EPP templates, and instructions for getting ready.




The cost for the entire club is just $6.00 if you sign up by June 8. After that, the price will go up to $8.00.

Note: All of the books represented in this stitching club are considered classics, but a few contain views and character portrayals that are problematic at best. Rather than avoiding these titles completely, I see them as opportunities to think and talk about what makes these themes wrong then and now, where the beliefs still exist, and how we can do better going forward.

Well, I finished cross stitching the Kawaii Crossing Bakery, and now I have the free pattern for you!

Let me tell you, this little town is my happy place. And I just want to spend more time here. Like, I want to actually walk down these streets and visit the sewing shop, garden center, and bakery. Because a sweet and cute world is what I'm craving. How about you?



As I added the bakery to my town, I continued stitching the streets a little. Stitching all of this early would make the rest of this a lot easier down the road (get it...streets? down the road?). But I'm adding it bit by bit. At any rate, I love seeing this second row showing up.

With sharing both embroidery and cross stitch patterns for the Kawaii Crossing Wild Olive Stitching Clubs, I like to mix it up with which one I'll share first each month. And this time the embroidery folks get their pattern first!

This happy little bakery is all ready for you to embroider. You can add it into the English paper piecing mini quilt design or stitch it large on a tea towel or apron for the kitchen!

When I introduced this bakery, I mentioned that it's inspired by my grandma, and if she were still living, I'd definitely be stitching a kitchen towel for her. In fact, my embroidery journey started with her letting me stitch on her kitchen towels. Over the years, when I'd be helping (and probably baking!) at her house, I'd find one of those towels with my colorful running stitches still in place along the hems.

Oh, and speaking of when I introduced the Kawaii Crossing bakery...I managed to get more yeast! Yay for more baking!

Are you ready to embroider a kawaii garden center? This month's free Kawaii Crossing pattern is here! I really love this little flower pot shop and all its tiny details.

When I was little, I spent a lot of time at Frank's Nursery and Crafts. Did they have those stores by you? I have such happy memories of shopping there. Certainly lots of craft supplies. I even recently used some felt from my stash that still had Frank's price tags on the sheets!

But I also loved walking around outside by the plants. Like many garden centers, they had tiny pea gravel, separated by sidewalks. That pea gravel was my favorite. I used to look through it for "special" rocks and then slip them in my pocket. It's true. And boy did I get in trouble! My parents clearly didn't want me growing up to be a rock and landscaping thief. Ha!

Anyway, without realizing, I added a little yellow flower above the door on this garden center, which may have been a sub-conscious nod to Frank's. They had a similar yellow flower in their logo! But back to the pattern...

The tiny details that make this extra cute will make this a tricky pattern at times, but if you use only one or two strands on the bitty plants (on the shelf out front), that will help. That's for the tiny version that will work for the mini quilt. If you're using the larger version in the PDF those bits shouldn't be a problem.

It's time to get out in the garden and do some stitching! Okay, so it might still be a little chilly in some places to stitch outdoors, but at least you can cross stitch a garden center and mentally prepare for a new season. My latest Kawaii Crossing pattern is free and ready to download!

I've been adding these new patterns all in a row, and with the garden center, this top row is complete! I'm working mine in three rows, but I've seen some folks change this up a little. Here's the first little lane:



This is my first time making a larger cross stitch design made up of smaller elements, and I learn a little more with each pattern I add. Thank you for bearing with me. But I have to say I'm having so much fun!

If you're new to this, I'm working with two strands on 16-count Aida. You can grab the entire pattern (so far!) below, or work with the individual shop charts. For those, you'll need to look back through the cross stitch patterns from this year.
