memories...

YIP2010 - 151

Happy Memorial Day to you! Today is about remembering, and days like today are also good for creating memories to be remembered later. For example, we went to the parade today. It's small and simple, and just one of those nice Memorial Day kinds of things.

watching...

rain on my parade

Oh, and then it rained on our parade. It's still raining a bit now, but we're hoping it clears up for some good grilling later on. The grandparents and a friend are coming over for some picnicking. Fingers crossed for good weather!

a simple survey...

Hello friends! I've been thinking about blog things, and while I blog because I enjoy the experience, I want you to enjoy reading it too. So, would you take a moment to comment on this simple survey?

Of the following blog post topics, which are your top three favorites, and which one is your least favorite?
Embroidery
Shop Talk (new items, updates, sales, etc.)
Freebies (printables, patterns, etc.)
Crafty Life (general things that I'm creating)
Random Life (non-crafty stuff going on in my life)

Be honest, and if there's something you want to add, feel free!

idea: needlepoint wall art

I'm not sure where I stand on vinyl wall decals, but I do like the idea of adding the stitched look, large scale, to a room.

today I am...

box man

...still smiling at this box my sister decorated yesterday.

...waiting anxiously for a package of lovely things to arrive.

...relearning algebra to assist my brother.

...getting ready for a baseball game tonight.

...thinking that I should get something checked off of my long list.

ideas for floss holding...

I've been looking through all of the products on the DMC site lately (for reasons that I'll share soon), and their horse floss holders caught my eye. Horses aren't really my thing, but the idea is good.

In all honesty, I should probably give up on keeping my floss organized. But at least I'd like it to be less tangled, which is why these floss holders from Girl on the Rocks are so attractive to me. (You know, that and the fact that they are too darn cute!)

1. Matryoshka Embroidery floss organizers, 2. Owl Embroidery Floss organizer

But then I got to thinking, maybe I could make my own. Ponoko has been calling out to me, and this would be a good opportunity to have some acrylic or bamboo cut. And so I started sketching a little.

floss holder ideas

But perhaps I could do something on my own here at home...I pulled out the Crop-o-Dile.

wooden floss holder

And punched a hole in a wooden disc. That works. But it's a little small. I could get a larger piece though. Hmm...or perhaps recycled cardboard?

YIP2010 - 147

With a little bit of felt, it became a ladybug, with a spot from my needle to be stored too. I like it.

But I feel like the idea could be explored more. So, here's the deal. Would you like to brainstorm with me? Let's toss around some ideas for shapes and materials...and who knows what kind of fun we could come up with!

Oh, and thank you for the ideas about the pearl cotton storage...this is all sort of related and I am trying not to just give up and have it all go in a big bag!

pearl cotton and a note...

YIP2010 - 146

I received this beautiful color variations pearl cotton in a swap, and today I pulled it out for use. It's kinda pretty much delicious. But I do have one question: Now that I've started it, what's the best way to store it?

And just a note. June is almost here, and if you are interested in having your blog sponsor Wild Olive, check out the sponsorship page, or send an email to molliejohanson [at] gmail.com

giveaway: mamahood

Do you need help figuring out what's for dinner? I thought so. Head over to MamaHood and enter her giveaway for an amazing resource. (So far, I'm the only entry...so I shouldn't add to the competition...but it ends tonight, so I'll share the love!)

a whole lotta stitching going on...

On The Midway

On Friday, I shared this with you when it was just transferred to the fabric, but now it's all done! This is from a new set of carnival themed patterns called "On the Midway." I'm having a hard time choosing a favorite, which sounds terribly full of myself, I think. But...carnival is just too cute. You know, when you look past the ick factor.

I've started another embroidery for another set of new patterns, but first...check out this hoop.

boilproof

I've shown it before, just after I got it, and it's what you see above too. This is a vintage hoop, and I've never seen one like it before. Usually, I don't stitch in vintage hoops because, while I like the idea of it, they just don't hold things as well. The fabric really slips. Not so with this one! It holds things very tight, and I love it. If you find this type, get one. If you find a few, let me know.

YIP2010 - 145

And here's the next one. It's a jar of pickles! I'll let you guess what else will be in this set. Your only hint is that it reminds me of someplace that my grandpa and I used to visit every summer...

bar-b-qued cupcakes...

Memorial Day is just a week away already...can you believe it? And what do you think about when Memorial Day comes? Cupcakes, of course! No? You were thinking more of grilling? Ah, well, then these are perfect:

bar-b-que cupcakes!

1. bbq cupcake with shish-ka-bob, 2. 4th of July Hot Dog Cupcakes, 3. BBQ Picnic Cupcakes - Hamurgers, 4. BBQ Cupcakes, 5. BBQ Picnic Cupcakes, 6. BBQ Cupcakes

I'm really quite amazed by these. But there's one thing that would make them perfect. The addition of some Bar-B-Cute cupcake wrappers!

Bar-B-Cute! Cupcake Decor

I've been thinking of adding printable cupcake wrappers to my shop, and thought this would be a fun way to try them out. So, do me a favor. Print these out and wrap some cupcakes with them. Then let me know if you like them, and if I should make more for the shop. Have fun with them!

book: sew me, love me

My friend showed me this book, and it is WAY cute. Best of all, hand sewing is all that is required!

today steph stitched...

YIP2010 - 142

...a teeny tiny viking hat! I'm quite impressed with her stitching on vinyl skills...

this weekend...

YIP2010 - 141

I'm very excited, because tomorrow my friend Stephanie (and her entire family) are coming to visit from Canada. Steph is still in middle school, but she's quite the crafty gal, and I'm looking forward to stitching with her.

One of my planned projects is what you see above. It's a little tricky to tell because the lines are light, but it's one of those clowns from a carnival game. You know, the kind that you knock down with a ball? It's from the latest pattern set that I drew up. Yay!

Also planned for the weekend will be to work on a project or two for my summer class. I'm still deciding which to work on...perhaps Steph will get to pick. Yes, that's right, she gets to see class stuff before everyone else! (There are perks to being one of my friends...)

What are you working on this weekend? Fun stuff?

make a doily headband...

doily headband

Do you love doilies as much as I do? I was looking at my first successfully crocheted doily (ok, still my ONLY successfully crocheted doily), and had an idea. What if it became a flower, and what if that flower decorated a headband? That could be fun!

doily headband

You'll need a doily (mine was about 5.5" diameter), embroidery floss, and an elastic headband.

doily headband

Start by shaping the doily into a flower. Tie it in place. (I used a bit of the crochet thread that I trimmed off, but you could use floss.)

doily headband

Then take a long length of embroidery floss and tie onto the flower.

doily headband

Wrap the floss tightly around the base of the flower. The closer to get to the ruffle part, the tighter your flower will be, which can be helpful if your doily is large.

doily headband

Before tying off the floss, wrap it around your headband several times. Do a bit of criss-cross so that it will stay in place and not droop. Now, secure the floss with a few knots, and trim.

doily headband

You're all set to wear your new doily flower headband!

cute: grace

Yesterday I gave my little sister a skein of floss, and she was soooo excited. After she tangled it all up twice, I wound it onto a bobbin for her. She took it to bed with her because she loves it so much!

these ladies are the best...

May is the first month that I've offered sponsorship here on Wild Olive, and I'm really happy that I did. As you may know, sponsor spots are open only to blogs, and today I'd light to share a little bit about the blogs, and the lovely ladies behind them, that are supporting me. Do me a favor and take some time to visit them all. They are the best!

green bean studio...

Green Bean Studio is the blog of Katie Green. Katie and I "met" on Flickr when I commented on her drawing of herself in a Totoro towel. Come on, a Totoro towel? I could tell that she was someone I would like. And I was right. Katie is a gifted illustrator, a talented crafter, and a really nice person. She recently started a zine called The Green Bean, and I'm excited to say that I'll be contributing to a future issue.

scissor quirk...

Scissor Quirk is Michelle Clement's blog. I can't tell you exactly when I first saw Michelle's work (on Etsy), but I can say that I was instantly in love. On her blog she shares all kinds of wonderful. Crafty stuff, scrapbooking stuff, and my personal favorite...piratey stuff. Oh yes.

I just might...

I Just Might Explode is where you'll find Kara Haupt. It's really difficult to think that Kara is just finishing high school. She is a successful scrapbooker, crafter, photographer, and really, quite charming. This year, Kara is sharing a list that she calls "DO." Each week (or something close to that) she does something from the list. Something important. Something fun. The point is to do.

Just recently, two more blogs signed up, so this is their first introduction!

sew tara...

SewTara is Tara's delightful crafty blog, and I'm so happy that she found me! Tara makes some really, really cute stuff, and yes, I'm a little (read: so very) jealous of her sewing skills. She recently survived her first two craft shows, which is no small feat! Be sure to do some exploring on her blog, because wait until you see what she did with an IKEA table runner!

letters mingle souls...

Letters Mingle Souls is a blog of two friends. Blair and Robin have joined up to create some fun new things for their shop, and they've started a blog to accompany it. (Blair has been a customer of mine, and she's come up with a few of the ideas behind some of my illustration sets.) I really love that they are already working for a cause; the green ribbon is part of a project to help raise funds for a friend going through chemo.

Thank you soooo much ladies! I really, really appreciate you!

the virtue of responsibility...

I was thinking that I'm overdue for another Virtues pattern, and I asked around the house for what I should do next. My mom reminded me of this story from Sunday:

This month, the kids in our church's children's ministry are learning about responsibility. When my mom asked the kids in her group for an example of being responsible, one girl told her about how her parents have given her the job of putting away her soccer gear when she gets home. She never remembered, and always dropped it inside the door of their utility room. She was told that if she continued to drop her messy gear in the utility room, that the consequence would be that she would have to scrub the floor of the entire utility room.

Guess what? She forgot about her responsibility and then had to scrub the floor (after all, it was mostly her mess!). It took over an hour. She explained that she'll never forget to put her gear away again. This was a lesson in responsibility.

And so, in honor of this sweet little dear, I have for you Responsibility:

Responsibility - a free pattern

giveaway: our city lights

Oh hey, so I'm a sponsor over at Our.City.Lights, and there's a giveaway going on. For some of my patterns! Stop by, check out Diana's fabulous blog, and enter the giveaway!

reminder: winner

I'm still waiting to hear from Sellita/Gisella from San Antonio, TX. If you're reading this, please send your name/address to molliejohanson (at) gmail.com so that I can add it to the Sewing Machine order with World Vision. And if you'd rather not add it, that's fine too! (Let me know though, so I can get the order in.)

Thanks!

a big announcement...

I've been itching to share this, and now...without further ado...

This summer, I'm teaching on online class!

The Embroidery Project: Beyond Fabric & Floss

The Embroidery Project: Beyond Fabric & Floss will be a five-week class, hosted on a private blog. I'll be sharing techniques for embroidering ON different types of materials, stitching WITH different types of materials, and even some different uses for embroidery patterns. I'm really excited, because I've got some wonderful folks who are going to contribute special embroidery patterns, and a few amazing guests who have offered their valued advice to the class.

More info and registration will come in early June, and the class will begin in July. For now, I'm busily stitching away and creating some way fun projects. There's so much work that goes into this sort of thing, but I'd rather work hard early on so that the class itself goes smoothly for me and all who sign up.

Now...I have some merit badges to design!

recipe: guacamummus

Sundays are snack food dinner nights. I'm off to make some of this.

we made it to 40...

YIP2010 - 135

If you follow me on Flickr, then you may have seen my progress this week as I've (well, we've...my mom helped) been making otedama bean bags. These truly could have ended up like the necklace from yesterday's post...they seemed to go on and on. But we needed to make 40 of them for Sunday School. I'm thrilled to say, that today I stitched the last three closed. Woo hoo!

(The tutorial is from here, but we machine stitched two sides to save time.)

Oh, and speaking of unfinished projects, SongBird just started a Flickr group for this sort of thing, so join, add your pics, and then don't feel so bad about those projects that never reach completion!

tutorial: fabric tape

Stuff like this makes me feel utterly un-creative. Seriously...how did she come up with this genius?

bottom of the pile...

potential project

This is something that has been planned for nearly three months. I saw this (gorgeous!), and thought, I could try something like that. So I cut out a template to try, and made a simple version out of cheap felt, and gave it to my sister. It needed a bit of attention, but generally, I liked the look.

But, I just can't seem to get back to it and make it into what I want. It ends up on the bottom of the pile. Over and over.

Do you have anything like that?

we have a winner...and a winner...

I want to thank everyone who entered my 1000th post giveaway! Especially Liz, who really went the extra mile to spread the word and get those bonus entries. My hope and prayer with this is that more and more people will help support the work of World Vision, so if you haven't already, please visit their site.

Now, for the first winner...

Gisella from San Antonio, TX! Send me your full name and address so that it can go in with the Sewing Machine purchase. (email molliejohanson {at} gmail {dot} com)

And the true winner, well, I don't know her. But soon I'll be ordering her Sewing Machine, and I'll be praying for her and her family. Please join me, if you're so inclined. I know that good things are going to be happening for her.

david the gnome...

All that talking about gnomes the other day got me thinking about a show from a while back. David the Gnome. Oh! So wonderful! So I did a quick search and found it to watch on YouTube. It's still as delightful as I remember:

And of course, then there's this, which the show was based on. Sigh. I love this sort of thing.

paralyzed head-spinning...

Perhaps you can relate to this. When I have a lot of things that I a) could do, b) should do, c) want to do, I am often incapable of doing them. It's as though my head begins spinning with all of these thoughts and ideas, and suddenly, I'm paralyzed. Unable to do any of them.

I had this feeling today, and it isn't the first time. But it does worry me, because, how long will it last? Will I get anything done? What am I doing? Ahhh!

YIP2010 - 131

Stopping can help. But today mundane tasks saved the day. Actually, it was sorting out Sunday School curriculum papers. It didn't require too much brain power, needed to be done, and it took my mind off of the other things floating around in my head.

I think that tomorrow I may be ready to move forward again. But if the blog seems a little quiet, or well, blah for the next few days...you'll know why.

reminder: giveaway

There's still time to spread the word and enter my 1000th post giveaway. Don't miss it!

your feedback is appreciated...

Did you know that you're awesome? You are. I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the amazing thoughts and ideas and suggestions that you left me regarding pens and pencils for embroidery. Your help is so wonderful!

May I ask for some more input? I'm working on some new ideas, and would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

gnome

This is gnome that I've sketched up for some backyard illustrations. Think plastic flamingos, tire swings, etc.

midway

And this is to go with some carnival midway illustrations. Think games and cotton candy and such.

Both of these are ideas that I've been tossing around for some time. I have some sketches of fun objects that go with these, but I'd like more, and I'd really like to hear from you. Because, you know, you're awesome.

mom's day...

Just dropping by with a quick wish for a happy Mom's Day! On our way home from church we saw a family of geese crossing the road, and decided that they were on their way to Mother's Day brunch...

Hope your day is lovely!

i know it's crazy...

my transfer pencil

What you see here is what I use to transfer embroidery patterns. It's also what I use to sketch embroidery patterns. It's just a regular pencil. (This is a little embarrassing for someone who creates patterns to admit!)

But I'm trying some new things; branching out, if you will. So I went to Hobby Lobby to buy my first transfer pen or pencil (I was open to trying either, or perhaps, both).

Funny thing is, I couldn't find either of these tools in the embroidery section. Am I crazy to think that I should have found one or both there?

video: squirrel kiss

Yes, a squirrel actually kisses a guy. Well, sort of.

in the works...

I've got a lot of projects that are either in the works, or planned to be in the works, so I thought I'd do a quick update.

x-stitchin

Above, a Mother's Day gift for my mom. I really don't see this getting finished by Sunday. I had forgotten how long counted cross-stitch actually takes. And please, no comments about my doing this wrong and not starting in the middle. I can't think that way, so I cross-stitch weird.

YIP2010 - 126

These are some sketches that I've started for a painting. Those are zombie objects and they are for a special request from a friend. Not my typical style to do zombies, but I'm totally digging them.

mmm coffeeee

This is for a secret something that I'm hoping to work on more this weekend and coming week. If all goes as planned, I'll be sharing more info next week.

YIP2010 - 127

And this, dear blog friends, is a completed project. I made hexagons, I stitched them together, and I made a pincushion. My first! I found that making the hexagons was quite enjoyable, but also time-consuming. I admire those that make quilts out of these babies, because...whoa. I can't even imagine.

(And a reminder: The 1000th post giveaway is still going a few posts down!)

ideas: paper doilies

I've seen so many wonderful things using paper doilies lately, I think that I need to raid the stash at my house. Here, here, and here.

1000 (a very special giveaway)...

1000!

Yowza! 1000 posts! 500 seems like it was not that long ago, but then, I have been blogging more lately. And a confession: I have blogged more often, knowing that this was coming up, and I've been excited about it.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, I'm holding my biggest giveaway yet! But I don't want to get ahead of myself, so let me tell a little bit of what is on my heart.

If you have been a reader for a while, you may be aware that I have a passion for the work of World Vision. With the help of my readers and shop customers, last year we put together 45 Caregiver Kits. This year, I'll do more of that, but I've also felt led towards some other World Vision projects.

In so many parts of the world, women and girls do not have the same opportunities in life that we do. I am privileged and so are you. Even if times are really tough. If you're reading this, no matter how or where you're reading it, you've got it good compared to a lot of women. So I've set up a fundraising page. My goal is to raise $1200 in the next year. Which is a lot. But it can happen with small gifts from you. Just think about that.

Now, the giveaway.

singer

What's the prize? A SEWING MACHINE!

This is a little different from other giveaways, because the winner here, isn't just the person whose name gets chosen. The real winner is the woman in a country far from here who will receive the sewing machine.

If you are chosen, you will receive a card from World Vision saying that a sewing machine was given in your name. And someone that you and I will never meet will get the chance to start her own small business. Wow!

Yes, this may seem like a strange giveaway, but to be honest my real goal here is to tell people about the amazing work of World Vision.

So...there are a lot of ways to enter:

1. Leave your name and location in a comment.

2. Visit World Vision's donation page, then tell me which item touched your heart in a comment.

3. Blog about this giveaway, then leave a link to the post in a comment.

4. Tweet about this giveaway, then tell me that in a comment.

5. Make a donation (any amount!) on my fundraising page, then tell me in a comment.

6. Do all of those things, then tell me that you did in a comment.

(Remember, if you win, you will not receive the sewing machine prize. Your prize is that a sewing machine is being donated in your name.)

This giveaway will go until next Wednesday. Help me spread the word about this gift that we can give, and let's be prepared for good things! Ready? Go!

UPDATE: Per Liz's request, there is a button you can grab for my fundraising page...it's down on the right with the other buttons. Thanks!

hexagons...

YIP2010 - 124

I have been reluctant to get into hexagon piecing, even though I find them so attractive. I love the hand sewing part of it, and of course, they are small and small is fun. But you know, it's another thing.

So when I found this hexagon pincushion from Barefoot Shepherdess, I thought, oooh! There's a little hexagon project that I could actually try! And so I printed out some templates, and may just do this.

What things do you want to try, but haven't because you already have so many other things going?

(ps: this is post #999...big things are coming!)

love: stuffed stuff

Real stuff, printed on fabric, and made into tiny stuffed toys. Love it.

the fifth woodlanders embroidery pattern (and more!)...

restless violet

I think that Restless Violet would be a lovely thing to stitch for a Mother's Day gift, don't you? Yes. Definitely. Download the pattern here, or in the sidebar.

But if you are thinking that you would like something that doesn't require stitching, I have another project for you. I was inspired by pressed flowers like these and these:

pressed flowers!

1. Pressed flowers, 2. 028 Pressed daisy bouquet, 3. Miss Bunny in her garden, 4. Untitled

Pressed felt flowers!

pressed flower

Super simple: download this pattern. cut out the pieces from felt. lay them on the backing for a tiny frame. add a few bits of floss for details and stem. carefully place the glass on top. close up the frame.

Seriously, I didn't even glue these things in place! The pressure from the back holds it all. I'm going to give this to my grandma for Mother's Day. Handmade for mom or grandma is always nice, don't you think?

idea: vellum mobiles

When I saw these oh so perfect mobiles (via Creature Comforts), I audibly gasped. Colorful, simple, gorgeous.

may welcomes...

(I realize that it's May 3rd, so this comes a few days late, but there were other things going on.)

Welcome May! I can't believe that we're now in the fifth month of the year. Whoa. With a new month comes...

The May desktop calendar. It features Restless Violet (which you may remember is the name of Catherine's blog...and this illustration is named for her). The embroidery pattern will come soon, I promise...even in time for a quick bit of stitching for Mother's Day. For now, you'll find the desktops in the sidebar.

Also, an official welcome to my new sponsors! If you're reading this in a feed, please stop by the actual blog so that you can visit Katie's, Michelle's and Kara's delightful blogs.

And, and, and...I'm getting oh so close to 1000 posts here, and 1000 sales in my shop. They could even happen on the same day. To celebrate, I'm going to have a giveaway. A BIG one, different from any giveaway I've ever done, or ever participated in. I'm soooo excited, so be watching for it this week. Woooo!

the story wrap-up...

I can't believe how fast Story Week went by! I really loved having this focus for the past seven days, and I hope that it will continue in life. As we wrap this up, I want to leave you with a few links:

Katie's story of how she got to where she is now, Ms. Kara's look at how "Story" has affected her, and something that I just discovered, and feel as though I've missed out on: Craft Corps (there are lots of stories to be read there!).

Telling a story, telling YOUR story, can make a big difference. Go on...tell.

answers...

A few days ago, you asked some questions, and today I have some answers! This is a bit long, so we'll jump into it, and I'll throw in a few random pics of mine, just for good measure...

Q: What got you into graphics?

When I was in high school, my dad needed some signs made for work. Even though he worked for a large company, it was easier to just do it himself (he has an art background), but he needed software help. I ended up working on those, and subsequent projects, and learned a lot from the experience. When it came time to choose a work path, it took some time for me to realize it, but eventually I settled on graphic design. I really enjoyed my education, and have used it in lots of ways.

YIP2010 - 117

Q: When did you start Wild Olive?

The blog started in 2004 as a means of inspiring myself to do fun things, other than just work. The focus has sort changed over time, but it is still something that keeps me inspired to make, do and create new things. My shop just sort of flowed out of that and started in 2008.

Q: I was not home schooled but I'm thinking more and more that I'd love to offer that to my (future) kids. I've also already started looking into adoption and if you're interesting in elaborating on any of that part of your story I'd love to hear more about your experience.

This could probably be a post of its own (or two!), and I may do that. But the brief answer:

Homeschool: We have done things different ways at different times, but there has always been a fair amount of "unschooling" at our house. This basically means that you learn without usual formal, traditional curriculum. It gives the chance to learn at your own pace, and in lots of different ways. Growing up, I often felt that I wasn't learning things, and would crave things like "real grades". Oh, and when I was 12, I would have done anything to have a school locker! When I went to college, I discovered how much I had learned, and that beyond book knowledge, home education had done an excellent job of preparing me for life. I didn't just learn facts and figures, I learn how to be a better person, how to serve God with my life, and how to have a heart for my family.

YIP2010 - 112

Adoption: For me, this has been an amazing experience. My parents have always told me how unselfish my birth mother was (is!), and how could she not be? What an incredible gift she gave me and my family. The short story here is that my mom's doctor called to ask if my parents would be interested in adopting a baby. They excitedly said yes, and he tried to calm them down, asking if they wanted to know anything about the baby. They said they didn't care if it was a boy, a girl, black, white or polka dots...they wanted me! I was 4 days old when I joined our family. My siblings and I all have very different adoption stories, including working with an agency, meeting birth parents, and doing foster care leading to adoption (oh, and my littlest sister was born on a train!), but everything in my adoption was VERY private and sealed up somewhere. Seeing and being part of the adoption process, I can tell you, it isn't always easy. In fact, it can be quite challenging. But it is soooo worth it.

YIP2010 - 115

Q: What kind of music do you listen to? Do you listen while your designing?

I love music, and lots of it! When I'm working, I often listen to Pandora. My favorite stations that I've created are ones for Sufjan Stevens, She and Him, Badly Drawn Boy, The Decemberists, and lately Sondre Lerche. I really enjoy lots of indie music, and often don't even know/care who I'm listening to because I just like the sound. Is that terrible? Other favorites are Jars of Clay, Chris Tomlin, The Welcome Wagon...I could go on...

Q: What are some of your favorite books or TV shows?

This was a difficult one. I really love to read, but haven't done much reading lately. Boo. But favorite books are Pride and Prejudice, The Pirate Books (by Gideon DeFoe), and Jesus for President. And, we don't have cable or such, so I'm always behind with my TV shows (I watch on DVD). But I really like Big Bang Theory, Bones, and Friends.

blank canvas

Q: Do you have any pets?

We have a rabbit and a crazy, cross-eyed cat.

Q: Where have you traveled/would you like to go to?

Mainly I've traveled in the Midwest, plus regular trips to Atlanta and Orlando. The farthest I've traveled was to San Diego. And wow, there are a lot of places that I'd like to visit. Portland, Seattle, Boston, London, Italy, Sweden or Norway. But, well, I also like staying around here...

Q: I've been trying to convince my sister to open up her own etsy shop for ages. She's scared that people won't like what she puts out there...Did you have the same sort of trepidation? Were you afraid that you wouldn't be making something that people were interested in? And if so, how did you manage to overcome that fear?

I think that everyone has some of that fear. And actually, it was my sister who convinced me to get over it. But if you don't try it, you'll never succeed, right? I think that when I realized that I had very little to lose (other than pride!), it made sense to go for it. And the other thing that I have come to see is that if something you make doesn't work, or doesn't sell, or people just don't "get it", it's not the end of the world. I feel like I've done really well so far, and I still make things that don't sell. But I've enjoyed making them. And if you are creating things that you like, selling them is just icing on the cake.

Q: What creative thing do you do that's just for you? Meaning, not for the shop or business...

A lot of these things have sort of blended together for me. The patterns and illustrations that I make are ultimately for me. I would be doing this anyway. The shop part is what inspires the quantity of what I create. But I would also so that the crafty things that I share here are for me. And the sketching in my composition books. Truly, the things that are just for me, are the brainstorming of all of the above. I find that just coming up with ideas (even ones that never come to anything) is so relaxing for me. I love it!

Q: ...and top 3 "desert island" movies?

Pride and Prejudice (the Colin Firth version, obviously), America's Sweethearts, and My Neighbor Totoro.
