coming tomorrow for 2011...

january

For the last month, I've been working on something fun, and there will still be much work ahead. But at last the time has come to share with you one of the things that is coming for 2011.

I love the idea of 'zines, newsletters, subscriptions, things that comes around every month. You've see it here on the blog with the Woodlanders desktop wallpaper and embroidery patterns during 2010, and I'd like to expand on that. More about next year's blog theme later, but today's news will happen in the shop.

Announcing...

Something new...

The Pattern of the Month Club!

Coming tomorrow to the Wild Olive embroidery collection, you can sign up to receive a new set of hand embroidery patterns each and every month in 2011.

What will these patterns be? Well, it will be a surprise. Each month will vary in theme, size and number of patterns, but will will always be at least a pageful. And each of these pattern pages will be exclusive to the Club, never released before, and never to be released again.

Along with the patterns, there will be a mini newsletter including some thoughts from me, tips, ideas, fun stuff, and perhaps a special offer or two.

Normally, purchasing 12 patterns separately would cost $48, and buying them in packs of 3 would be $40. Membership in the Pattern of the Month Club, starting in January, will be just $35.

But memberships will be available tomorrow, in the shop, and on my blog, for a special early price of $30.

february

I am really, really excited about this ongoing project! The first two months are already lined up, and the ideas are rapidly forming for the months following. I do hope you'll consider joining the Club.

And might I suggest that this would make a lovely Christmas gift? I'd be happy to set up gift memberships for someone you know (or for you from someone who loves you and your love of stitching!).

Okay, enough of me going on. I need to get back to work!

falling behind...

YIP2010 - 325

Is it a bad thing that December isn't even here yet, and I'm already feeling way, way, way behind on Christmas?

-I had some blog posts planned for the weekend and today, but they have not yet come together. I'm three posts behind. (Although, I shouldn't think of it that way, as they will happen...eventually.)

-We are doing a family event at church on Saturday, and there are very few things for it that are complete and ready to go. This feels like we're at LEAST a week behind. (It WILL all work out though...it must!)

-I do not have a single present finished, and not very many started. That's like, at least a dozen gifts behind. (I'm already thinking of what handmade things I can purchase...just in case.)

-My sister and I have not made anything for our Christmas tree, which we are determined will still be made from scratch. What's that? 100 ornaments, plus yards of garland behind? (Thankfully, we haven't gotten our tree yet.)

In the meantime, I think I'll be using the supplies pictured above for a special project on someone else's blog, and perhaps get a start on those aforementioned gifts...

First, from my lovely sponsor, Kara:

tis the season fundraiser

Pilgrim Lee, Danielle Thompson, Rhian Cooksey, Kim Smith, and myself (Kara) contributed designs for postcard prints to benefit The Mercy House, a woman's home set to be built in Kenya the summer of 2011. Each 4x6" inch print is $6 or $24 for all 5 prints.

Oh. My. I really can't tell you how much fun I've had planning and posting this entire blog party. And how sad I am that it's all done. We'll have to do this again sometime...

Thank you soooo much to everyone who participated. My sponsors, my extra special guests, and each and every person who stopped by for the celebration!

today...

YIP2010 - 324

While all of these fun blog party things have been going on, I've also been celebrating away from the computer. I know, it seems like I've just been here posting and partying online (I have been here quite a lot, checking in, reading comments, smiling, etc.)!

But when I wasn't in the midst of blog party things, here's how my birthday day went...

I slept until 9, stayed in my PJs all morning, drank coffee and ate yummy cream cheese filled croissants. (I want no comments from Phil about this being a normal day for me!)

After receiving a few bonus gifts that I wasn't expecting, my sister and I went to Starbucks for a while. This meant more coffee (in my first red cup of the season!), and lemon pound cake.

As it is the day after Thanksgiving, dinner was leftovers, which I'm entirely fine with. I LOVE Thanksgiving leftovers! Afterward, my mom and I did some overdue craft planning (more on this at a later time).

Finally, I ended the day watching season 3 of Big Bang Theory on DVD, a gift from a friend. Oh yeah, and there was some pie and crocheting in the there too...

This has been my most mellow birthday yet (despite the Wild Olive name, I'm not exactly known for wild times!), but it has been so very lovely. And you've helped make it so!

music from my sweet sister anna...

First off I'd like to say a Very Happy Birthday to my dear sister! I've known Mollie for 23 years and I can't fathom my life without her. She's such a great sister and friend. To help celebrate Mollie's special day, I have put together a few songs that add a musical backdrop for a birthday get together or the soundtrack to help get creative thoughts flowing. Enjoy!

Anna, thank you so much. Love and hugs to you!

party tips from Annalea...

simple tips for a good party

birthday banner

hello wild olive friends and fans!  i am so excited to be here today to help mollie celebrate.  (thank you so much for inviting me to your party!)  i love a good party and, in my opinion, a good party makes you feel special.  i don't always have the time or energy to plan out all of the little details, but just a few personal touches can make the smallest event memorable.

here are some of my simple tips:
  • dress up your food.  whether you get a take-out pizza, make a cake from a box mix, or heat up frozen appetizers, everything looks nicer on pretty plates.  thrift shops and garage sales are great sources for affordable serving pieces.  better yet, borrow from friends and family.  and remember, things don't need to match, just coordinate.
  • take photos.  set up an easy photo booth with a flat sheet hung over a bookshelf or on the wall.  take a few minutes to capture some fun shots of your guests.  as much as we all love candids, this is a great way to make sure you get a photo of everybody.
  • make a banner! i love personalizing parties with a banner. i wrote up an easy tutorial last year that works well for this. or if you can invest in a set of alphabet stamps, they quickly transform punched or cut paper into something sweet and special.

my biggest tip?  a good party is more about the guests than anything else.  hospitality is more concerned with a welcoming atmosphere than a perfect menu or beautiful table setting.  if the planning gets in the way of this, you need to scale back.

there are so many simple ways to transform a gathering of loved ones to something special. what are some of your favorites? share your party tips in the comments and enter to win a personalized birthday banner of your own from my shoppe. (because i am a fan of a good party favor too.) the giveaway will remain open until sunday night, and we'll announce the random winner on monday.

happy birthday mollie!  i hope it is a wonderful day that makes you feel special and loved!

-----

Thank you so much, Annalea! I love all of your ideas, and I truly appreciate that in the midst of being a busy mom you took time out for the party!

printable cupcake decor...

cupcake decor

Cupcakes are probably my most favorite birthday (or every day!) treat, and even the most plain variety is good. But when you fancy them up, they get even better!

And so, I have for you some printable cupcake decor! Just download, print, trim, and...
-For the wraps, wrap them around a cupcake and tape them in place.
-For the picks, tape to a toothpick.

There are a bunch of designs in the PDF, which you can download here.

Have fun decorating your cupcakes!

katie's lemon drizzle cake...

Ready for another tasty treat? Katie baked a lemon drizzle cake (I LOVE lemon cake!), and guess what? It's vegan! So if you have vegan or vegetarian friends or family, you can still make a delicious dessert.

This recipe is from Katie's book, Bake Me a (Vegan) Cake, and is very visual:

But Katie didn't just draw this cake, she made one to celebrate!

Since she's all the way in Bristol, England, we decided that it would best if Katie and her boyfriend Luke ate the cake. I'm pretty sure it was yummy!

That's not all though...Katie recently released her book as an ebook, and she's giving a copy away to one lucky reader! Just leave a comment with your favorite cake flavor (and your email address so we can contact you). We'll choose a random winner Sunday night and announce the winner on Monday. Good luck!

And to Mollie—I hope you have a happy, happy birthday! I truly believe the world is a better place because you’re in it.

making cupcakes with cristina...

Hi There!

I’m Cristina from GetCraftee.com! I’m so excited to participate in Mollie’s blog party and share something fun with you all

Since it’s Mollie’s birthday, I thought it would be fun to show you how to decorate
some cupcakes with supplies you probably already have in your home. I’m also going to give you some links to my favourite baking resources.

First, you’re going to want to bake some cupcakes!

I used a cake mix for the purposes of this post, but try the following sites for some
great recipes:
While your cupcakes are baking, you’ll want to make your icing. Icing is the one
thing I will always make from scratch because then you’re able to control the
consistency of the icing. You can definitely still used store bought icing for this
tutorial though.

The recipe for buttercream icing I use is from Wilton.com. I substitute water for the milk in the recipe. Here are some tips to achieve the perfect icing:
  • If you have a stand mixer, use it! I used to make icing using my hand mixer, but not only is it very hard on your arm, it’s also very hard on your mixer! A stand mixer takes all of the hard work out of making icing.
  • Make sure all of your ingredients are at room temperature. Your shortening and butter should be softened in the microwave if they’re too hard.
  • If your icing seems too stiff, add in your water 1tsp at a time. I know this may seem like a small amount, but it really will make a difference.
  • To colour your icing, if possible try and use gel food colouring. It’s harder to find, but it won’t change the consistency of your icing unlike regular liquid colourings.
By now your cupcakes should be ready and cooled so it’s time to start putting the icing on your cupcakes!

There are a few ways to do this…

You can always spread the icing on using a spatula. Just because Cake Boss doesn’t do it this way, doesn’t mean it doesn’t look good! I’m not going to show you this method, but I’m sure we’ve all done it this way before.

The first method I’m going to show you is using a regular ol’ Ziploc bag!

First you’re going to cut the corner off of a Ziploc bag. Don’t cut it too big! Once you put your icing in there, you can always cut it bigger if needed. Then twist the bag so your icing is tight to the hole in the bag.

Now that the icing is in the bag, you can start to pipe!

Start on the outside, and work your way around until you reach the middle of the cupcake. You should have something that looks a little like this:

This will vary depending on how big you cut the hole in your Ziploc bag.

If you already have cake decorating supplies, you can use any type of tip you have to pipe on your icing. If you’re interested in professional products, I
recommend starting with this 12 Piece Cupcake Decorating Set from Wilton.

You’ll want to use the piping bags, and the piping tips included in the kit like so:

I used the Wilton 2D Tip (it’s one of my favourites!), and it makes a cute little swirl:

Now that you’re cupcake is all iced, you can do a few different things:
  • Add some fun sprinkles! Sprinkles come is so many different shapes, colours and sizes. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
  • Add themed figurines (Spiderman, Toy Story, Disney Princesses, etc.)
  • Make your own cupcake toppers!
I bet making your own cupcake toppers sounded like the most fun, right? Well I hope so, because I’m going to tell you how!

  • Download and print Craftee Cupcake Toppers or print off any templates you’ve found online
  • You’ll need 2 of each design you choose to use (one for the front, and one for the back! Your cupcake should look great from all angles!).
  • Cut them out using your favourite craft punch or scissors. I used a scalloped edge punch and a regular round punch for the toppers above.
  • Now you’re going to tape/glue a toothpick to one side of your topper. If your topper has lettering make sure your toothpick is coming out of the right end! I personally use Glue Dots because I find liquid glue too messy!
  • Once the toothpick is attached firmly to one side, you can attach the other side. Make sure all of your edges line up!
  • Now take that topper and stick it right into the middle of your cupcake!
Now you should have some fun cupcakes to display at your next party! Your friends
and family will be shocked that they’re home made. I promise

If you’re interested in going a littler further, here are a few of my favourite online
shops and products:
Thanks for letting me share my love of cake decorating with you! If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments!

Cristina, these are so much fun! Thank you so much for making treats. And, and, be sure to stop by later, because I have some cupcake toppers to download too...so much fun, and we're only about half way through the day!

Cate's printable elf house...

I'm a longtime fan of Cate Anevski. If you haven't seen her work, then the first thing you need to do is visit her blog, her shop, and her site for fun stuff (it's the Bee's Knees!).

You visited, right? See what I mean? Now you can be a longtime fan, too! And I'm sure you can imagine my glee when she agreed to do something fun for the blog party today. Look at what she cooked up:

a cupcake cozy from tara...

Okay, I know how much you love Tara's cup cozies, and this one may be the cutest ever. Tara designed this special Cupcake Cozy for a little giveaway for you! It's a little bit birthday, and a little bit oh-my-goodness-i-want-to-eat-12-cupcakes-every-day...

And it goes perfectly with the free drink that Starbucks will send you for your birthday! Now, what to order...

my birthday list...

my jo tote came in handy

The only thing on my birthday list this year was a Jo Tote. And I got to get it early so I could use it on our vacation. Thanks, Mom and Dad!

Now, blog parties are about presents, even on birthdays. But may I ask you for a gift? There's only one thing that I want.

I want you to think about something.

Would you think about giving a gift to World Vision? You don't have to give something, but I would love it if you thought about it. Maybe you could buy a Christmas gift that gives money to World Vision, AND a gift to your recipient. Or perhaps you could give a small amount to the Girls in Crisis Fund (this leads to my fundraising page). Or maybe, just maybe you might even think about sponsoring a child.

Just think about that for me, okay? Because that would be an amazing gift...

sonia's giveaway and printables...

Have you met Sonia? She's super sweet, and she has some birthday lovelies all the way from France!

Sonia started out making a pincushion to give away. Beautiful, yes? The back is natural linen, and it is filled with kapok.

You can win this special gift by leaving a comment with where in the world you would like to spend your next birthday (along with your email address so we can contact you). The giveaway will be open until Sunday night, and all winners will be announced on Monday.

And...that's not all!

Sonia has also made some printable birthday planning sheets, and EVERYONE gets a set of these! There are four pages of date planners, and one page of gift helpers.

Download: Page 1 | Page 2 | Page 3 | Page 4 | Page 5

Thanks, Sonia!

barely in the 70s...

I gotta tell ya, I love that I was born in the 70s. Sure, it was very close to the end of that decade, but I made it in! I do love me some disco music (I find it is excellent for listening to while painting...walls...not canvases), so I made a little party pattern to celebrate:

You can download a PDF of the pattern of this Shining Disco Ball, which includes two sizes. Now we're ready for more dancing!

birthday dance party with Kam...

 Happy birthday, Mollie!

I created this playlist with your birthday in mind. I wish you the best birthday ever and hope the music gets you in the mood to celebrate!

You better put your dance shoes on and take the phone off the hook...you'll just want to dance:

Yes, it's still a little early for these beats, but all the better to start out the day! Thank you Kam for getting us dancing...Am I old if I admit that a typical dance party at my house involves Perry Como?

cookies from Holly...

Parties need treats, and Holly has brought some to share!

On birthdays, I think it is best to eat lots and lots of your favorite food and feel absolutely no shame about it. For me, that is dessert. Cake, pie, cookies... you name it. I totally love it all! That is why I adore this recipe that I found from Clean Eating magazine... it is a way to indulge without feeling like you have completely eaten the entire world and then some :) And of course, a yummy cookie is a perfect birthday treat. Sweet and satisfying, different than the normal birthday cake, and oh-so-special indeed. Bake on...

Almond Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies
From Clean Eating Magazine,
March/April 2010

1 cup unsalted almond butter, stirred well
3/4 cup Sucanat
1 large egg
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp sea salt
3 oz dark chocolate (70% cocoa or greater), broken into small pieces

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a medium bowl. stir together the first 5 ingredients until blended. Stir in chocolate. Drop the dough by rounded tablespoonfuls onto parchment paper-lined baking sheets. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Let cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes. Remove to a wire rack and let cool for 15 more minutes.
Makes about 24 cookies.

Super yummy, right?!
A big happy birthday to my friend, Mollie!
May you have a lovely day and year ahead...
and of course, eat all the cookies you want today! :)
xo! -Holly

Thanks so much, dear! I can't wait to make some of these!

babymollie

...this was me. I've never been proud of this photo, but despite my scrunched-up, red-faced, sour look, my parents loved me.

By the way, my sister says I still make this face sometimes...

birthday fun from Erin...

Erin from Sunshine and Carousels has all kinds of good things to share...

First, stop by her blog and check out some decorating tutorials. They aren't birthday specific, but they are certainly easily adaptable! I especially like these medallions, her surprise invitations, and a seriously yummy looking recipe for carrot cake cupcakes.

Next, I asked Erin a couple questions...

Q: What's your favorite birthday memory?

A: My third year in college my best friends threw me a 'surprise' birthday party at a local restaurant and invited 40 of our friends and we had a hippie theme, pizza and cookie cake. We were all poor and in college and they made the sweetest gifts and handmade decorations and it was absolutely so much fun.

Q: What's your favorite birthday treat?

A: My favorite kind of birthday treats are just the time spent with my friends and family. I love it when people give me gifts with a lot of thought behind them or just do kind things for me. My perfect treat would be a night with coffee and board games and lots of laughter.

Sweet! And just to make this extra fun, Erin is giving away a $20 credit to her shop. Throughout this post you can get a look at the lovely things she makes, so you're gonna wanna enter for a chance!

Just leave a comment with your favorite birthday memory (be sure to include your email address so we can contact you). The giveaway will be open until Sunday night, and all winners will be announced on Monday. Good luck!

party time...

Blog Party

It's time for my first ever blog party! Yes, this is sort of like throwing a party for myself, but it's really for you. Because today will be filled with giveaways, and recipes and printables and fun. And none of those things would be nearly as lovely if you weren't here to participate!

There will be new posts pretty much every hour all day, and sometimes more often than that. And it's an open house, so you can come and go as you need to...hee!

Also, to celebrate, in my shop today I'm holding the 3rd Annual Mollie's Turning 29 Sale! EVERYTHING is 29% off when you use coupon code MOLLIE29. There will be a place to enter the code at checkout (a new Etsy feature), so don't miss that.

Ready to get this party started? I hope so!

psst...

the blog party fun will start at 7am! Yay!

happy thanksgiving stripes...

what i wore today...

Just a bit of stripes peeking today...but it's Thursday, so what did we expect?

I hope your day is filled with family and food and lots of giving thanks! Happy Thanksgiving, friends!

last minute thanksgiving decor...

givethanks

You may remember this printable banner from last year. It was available on The Sampler's website, but the site has changed, so I'm not sure that you can even find it anymore. I thought it would be good to have it be available here.

It's sort of a just in time sort of thing, because you can download, print, cut and hang it, all before your Thanksgiving guests arrive!

Also on my list for last minute Thanksgiving fun is these pinecone turkeys from Danielle Thompson. (And just a little hint: you can find a few free printable feathers from her digital kit in this post for making arrows.) I think they are the cutest!

the virtue of endurance...

Endurance - a free pattern

If anyone had endurance, it was the pilgrims! I really can't quite imagine leaving everything I know, only to face rough seas, illness, cold, starvation and even death. And they did it all for what they believed in. I'd like to think that I could do that, endure that, but I'm not sure that I could.

But I can be thankful that the pilgrims did. And I can stitch up one of their many virtues. And so can you! Just click the image to download the pattern from Flickr.

the inspiration...

Disney is all about the details, and they are there waiting to inspire a person like myself. And so, scattered amongst the family photos, there a bunch of things like these:

the tea party
The Dung and I
mission control
top secret puppet work?
oh, mary...

I can promise you this, in the coming months, you will see how these and other things brought up some ideas. I think we're gonna like it!

so magical...

On our trip to Disney World, I took over 1700 photos. And I'm going to show you every one of them. Kidding. I have a lot to share, but I don't want to bore. So if you would like to see more, you can check out the set of photos that I'm creating on Flickr. I'm sure that once I start editing them, there will be more that get added.

For now, here are the highlights from...

EPCOT:

Hollywood Studios:

How about one more post tonight with some of my favorite details and things that I captured purely for inspiration? Can you stand a whole day of my vacation? I hope so. It was a wonderful time, and I already want to go back.
