vintage craft: a new feature

My love for vintage craft supplies and crafty type things has come up from time to time. But I've realized that I have so many things like that you might like to see (especially as I've been given many of the things that were my grandma's). So here and there I'll be sharing those in a new feature called Vintage Craft.

Today I have a new old book. It's from 1978 and I got it in the used book bin at the library. One dollar for a good cause, and it's filled with just what I'm looking for!

It was difficult to get a good pic of, but the cover pattern is embroidered, and is done as an all-over design for a table cloth. Wow. Don't think I'll be trying that one.

Fantastic folk designs...

Could this be any more classic 70s? I'm not sure that I'll make this exact design, but it will definitely get me started with trying crewel.

Some traditional flowers...

Wow. Can you imagine the time that would be required for this?

I didn't even find the creche until after I bought it, but this is my favorite find. My mom collects Nativity scenes and loves it when I make them for her. Guess what she's getting for Christmas this year?

It's a funny thing, because there are some vintage craft things that I sort of shake my head at. How did they come to be? But then there are some real jewels. And I want them all. Okay, maybe not all of them. Remind me that I don't need them all. You'll do that for me, right?

  1. I actually have this book and I think I also paid $1 for mine. There is another volume for applique that is pretty neat. I pick up the vintage craft books at thrift stores all the time because no one else wants them it seems! I like the new feature idea by the way!

  2. I love your new feature too! I am addicted to collecting vintage thread embroidery patterns -- I have a whole stack of them from the 30's, 40's , 50's .... some of the patterns are so kitschy they make me laugh, but others are just incredible ... and it is so hard to find good thread patterns these days!

  3. Ugh, sorry, not "thread embroidery" ... vintage thread crochet is what I meant to say (embroidery on the brain!) :)
