new pattern // believe (a narwhal embroidery design)

Believe. (a narwhal embroidery pattern)

The other day I felt the need to draw a narwhal. It was one of the creatures that I considered having in my book, but left out, and that kinda made me sad. It was time.

Now you can get a very sweet little narwhal surrounded by some bubbles, seaweed, and such. And a word: believe.

Why believe? Well, I just love hearing from people that they didn't think that narwhals were real creatures. Sometimes I read comments from people who still don't know that they really do exist. If you're one of those people, go Google it. We'll wait.

...

Did you see? Do you believe me? They're real! There truly are unicorns swimming around in the oceans!

Although the design fits in an 8-inch hoop, and that's sorta big for one design, I'm calling this a mini pattern. Why? So that you can get this pattern for just $2.00, or get it in a choose 3 pack for only $5.00.

Of course, you don't have to use the entire design. You could change the word at the top, stitch the narwhal alone, or swap in another design within the undersea borders.

And yes, I did use metallic thread for this. It's some sort of magical thread that was super easy to work with. And get ready for this...I don't know where to get more or even the brand name. If I figure it out, I'll be sure to pass along the info of the incredible metallic floss!

  1. Your little guy is so cute. This reflects exactly where I am right now, "believe." I am believing that the Lord is there to help make what seems impossible, possible. Thanks for this little bit that fits so well!

  4. Oh, Mollie, this is really darling. (Do you think people feel/think the same way about platypus—platypi—hm, not sure about the plural for those creatures, but do you?) The world we live in really is full of wonders, and part of me suspects we'll never really plumb their depths. In a way, that makes them all the more wonderful, though.

Hey Mollie!! This pattern is soooooo adorable!! I had no idea there was such a thing as a narwhal, pretty cool!!

Anyways I have a question for you. I am going on a little over a month long mission trip this summer and am looking for a good craft to take, I figured you would be the person to ask (all that you do is the best). :) I'm not sure how much time I would end up being able to spend on it, we will probably be really busy but then again I might really want that time to calm down, process, and stitch! So what project do you think would be best to take? I do own a Stitch Love book (I loooove it) if that makes any difference.

    Thank you so so much!!

Or maybe even a type of project you have found good for traveling if you can't think of a specific project. It would also be neat if I could give it to some of the kids I meet there but that doesn't matter so much.

I look forward to hearing your advice!!

      Anna :)

    2. I've been thinking about this, and the idea of making something you could give the kids is so wonderful!

Small embroidery projects are easy to travel with, but you may want to have a couple prepared in case you have more time than expected (or if they happen to go really fast!). I also like EPP for traveling.

When are you leaving? I have an embroidered necklace planned for next month, and it might be the perfect kind of project!

    Hey Mollie,

My mom just pointed out that it might not end up being the best situation for me to be giving a couple gifts to some of the kids (I wouldn't want to cause conflict and seem like I was picking favorites or something like that) and since I do not have the ability at the moment to make tons of little gifts, it might not be the best idea at this point. :/ I might make an Outback Trio just in case there is a situation that I am able to give a little gift, if nothing else I will want to give a gift to the friends I make on the team!

I have never tried EPP, but it has definitely been on the list of things I would like to do! Do you have any suggestions for a beginner's project that would work well for the trip? Also, what sort of small embroidery projects are you thinking about?

I will be leaving late June.

    Anna :)

I have yet another question/suggestion. I have been preparing to order some felt from benzie design trying to figure out what colors/how much I need. If you have a list handy that would be so helpful, but if you don't I'm happy to figure it out. Anyways, I noticed that she has some color collections by other people and I was thinking how fantastic it would be if there was a Stitch Love color collection, it would be super handy and helpful! My mom thought I should suggest the idea to you so you could consider approaching Benzie Designs about it. I hope it would work out!!

I was also wondering what beginner EPP projects/small embroidery projects you would recommend for the trip.

Thank you so so much for all your help with all my different questions! I really appreciate being able to ask you and I hope my questions haven't been too much trouble. :)

    2. Ahh...your mother is a wise woman. It would be better to bring small treats, balloons, etc. Or if you got started now, simple braided bracelets!

Here are some embroidery projects: http://wildolive.blogspot.com/search/label/TTDW%20Embroidery (some are bigger, but if you go through all the pages, you'll see lots of options)

Here's a link to some EPP projects: http://wildolive.blogspot.com/search/label/EPP

But this one in particular would be easy to bring with you: http://wildolive.blogspot.com/2014/10/project-epp-halloween-ish-triangle-mug.html Just glue and cut the pieces before you go, then you can work on the top panel on the trip, and finish it off when you get home!

I don't have a list of colors for Stitch Love, because I used different felt from my stash when I made the projects. But that's a great idea! If I make another book, I'm totally going to work with Benzie Designs to put together a pack!

I hope these answered your questions, but if not, let me know. I'm happy to help!

Thank you so much for your help! At this point I think the triangle mug rug would be perfect! I have just one more question... :)
Where do you like to find your fabrics? Most of the ones you use I love. Anyways so my plan was for the mug rug would be to use some bright, happy, spring-y colors (kind of like that beautiful one you recently used for the "Hope" banner). I was also hoping that I could get a fat quarter, would that work for the triangle mug rug project?

Thank you soooo much for all you patience and help!! It has been so nice to be able to ask you and get your advice.

      Anna :)

    4. Most of the time I buy my fabrics at JoAnn, and I look for higher quality materials (avoid their individual fat quarters!).

Sometimes I order things online from a variety of places (Etsy, Missouri Star Quilt Company, even Instagram sales).

The gorgeous floral from my hope banner is Liberty cotton lawn fabric, which I splurged on at Purl Soho when I visited last fall (http://www.purlsoho.com/purl).

I'm sooo happy to help. Anytime. May I ask, where is your mission trip?

  9. comment about the metallic thread.... I get mine from Jenny Hart at Sublime Stitching. It's a fine braid rather than a separable floss, and it is a DREAM to work with. I believe the brand is Kreinik.
Love, love, love working with that stuff. It's the only metallic thread I use now.

    1. Thanks, Jennifer! It's quite possible that this is some Kreinik old stock, because it's a tiny braid like you described. I'll have to try it and compare.
