book review: make hey

Make Hey!

Back in the early spring, I subscribed to Mollie Makes, and free with my subscription, I received Pip Lincolne's new book, Make Hey! While the Sun Shines. The glorious thing about getting a book like this from a UK publisher is that it came to me in the summer, when it actually doesn't come out here until November. Sweet! I felt extra special enjoying this book early...

But I didn't want to make anyone feel too jealous for too long, so I've hung onto all this time before writing up a little review and telling you all that you too should own this book. (By the way, the book was free to me, but no one asked me to write this!)

First of all, this book is really lovely. There's a geometric theme running throughout, with an emphasis on triangles. Flipping through, I feel a bit like Telly from Sesame Street and am now completely smitten with triangles. I love them.

Pip has brought together a great mix of paper projects, sewing, some crochet, and more. I feel like all of the projects are doable, and that I actually want to do all of them!

If I'm being brutally honest, I didn't feel that way about her first two books. I liked them, but I didn't buy them because they didn't cause me to want to make everything. Make Hey! grabbed me in a way the other titles didn't.

I plan on making several things from this for Christmas gifts, including the cushion above (for my brother, not for the cat), and a chess board (for my other brother). And if I get ambitious I might even crochet a bunch of ornaments! Then I'll start making my way through the rest...

In addition to the projects, there are some recipes and pattern cards in the front, extensive instructions on crafting basics, and lots of pretty pictures of creative collections. Seriously...this book is eye candy!

Highly recommended! Two thumbs way up! A+! Well done, Pip!

To order your copy (I know you want it...), check out Amazon. (full disclosure: that's an affiliate link) (more full disclosure: I think you should buy this book, even if you don't use my affiliate link)

Do you have any new books that you're loving? I've officially run out of room on my big book case, but that won't stop me from adding to my collection!

  1. Looks cute! I just got Pretty in Patchwork: Holidays, and I'm excited about making some of the projects before Christmas.

My latest fascination is spinning, so I just ordered a book about spinning for beginners, and one about dyeing fibers naturally. Can't wait for those to arrive! :)

I have a craft book addiction.

  4. Craft-A-Day by Sarah Goldschadt (which I'm currently giving away 3 copies of on the Funky Finds blog) is an AWESOME book! Also loving Lisa Lam's A Bag for All Reasons. Both are beautiful books full of great projects!

  5. I've had my eye on that book - in fact, it's already on my Amazon wish list. How do you like your MM subscription? It's a magazine I buy every month but I have hesitated to subscribe because I was worried about the condition it would arrive in. I don't mind when my Entertainment Weekly shows up all battered, but my Mollie Makes issues are little treasures I'd hate to see torn up.

    1. I can't accurately answer your question because my MM issues are delivered to my friend in England. She reads them, and then mails them to me in perfect condition! So...they are delivered well in England, anyway!

It's a delayed delivery for me, but it allowed me to get a better rate, and share with a friend. We have a similar arrangement with me getting her subscription to Uppercase, then mailing them to her!

    2. That's a really great system you have going! Getting Mollie Makes at Barnes and Noble is delayed here too as well. I'd say I can buy the issue about a month after in comes out in England. How fun to have a magazine swap :)

  6. I just picked up the Hello Sandwich craft book from Mitsuwa (special ordered) this weekend!!! I haven't had time to crack it open yet (we had a friend with us, so I thought it would be rude to peruse the book over dinner). As soon as I read it (or, I should say, have my husband translate it), I will let you know if it's a "must-have" :)

  7. Good grief, now I've got "Triangle Bob Triangle Pants" running through my head.... I picked up Toys to Sew and really like some of those, as well as Doodle Stitching (fun book!)

Thanks for sharing, it looks like a delicious amount of eye candy. My favorite book at the moment is "At Home With Handmade Books" by Erin Zmrzla.
