my favorite things: embroidery floss
This coming Saturday, it's my birthday! Should I cheer? Should I cry? I'm not sure...but I do know that we like having a "birthday week" at my house. Instead of doing birthday things all week long, I'm going to share some of my favorite things!
A little like Oprah, but not at all like Oprah. You know, because I'm not a bajillionaire. I don't watch her, but you can't not know about her favorite things, am I right? Now...Ready for my first favorite thing?
(Did you read that in your best Oprah voice? I hope so!)
This may come as a surprise to you, but I really like embroidery floss. I do!
I may have a serious problem. I can't get enough of this stuff! Recently I went to the needlework shop and bought all of these lovely types to test. I'll let you know how these go for me once I've given them a try.
That last one is #1 pearl cotton, with regular six strand floss in there for scale. Crazy, right?
No joke, the day I bought this floss, this was the fortune I got in a cookie. "Be careful, you are easily tempted." Really?
I love that floss can be so pretty, just like a bouquet of flowers. Look at all those colors! These happen to be the colors that I've chosen as my "signature colors", and after months of working with them, I'm still loving them.
Perhaps you'd love them too? I've got this set of 23 DMC flosses that I'd like to give away to one lucky reader! (Oh how I wish I could send a set to everyone!)
To enter, leave a comment with your favorite color (the name, or the floss number...I'd love to read either!), and be sure I have a way to contact you. The giveaway will remain open until Sunday, November 27th at 10pm CST. A random winner will be announced on Monday the 28th.
NOTE: International Readers, please enter! I'm happy to ship these anywhere!
Good luck, and watch for another favorite thing tomorrow! (I'll give you a hint...this one will involve some making, and a bit of green felt!)

Wow, so lovely.....I love my blues, especially the thread that has different shades in. I hope you have a lovely birthday saturday. I am celebrating the big 30 on sunday myself
ReplyDeleteAt the moment I am totally in love with mustard. Maybe it´s because it´s everywhere in the shops or because it reminds me of the wonderful autumn we had here, I don´t know. But I am happy I can finally buy some things in this color even in normal shops.
ReplyDeletefloss is my weakness too!!!
ReplyDeleteOhhh! I recently fell in love with embroidery, and decided to give it a try, so this would be amazing to win and to have so many colours for the start! :) For now, my favourite colour is red, I'm obsessed with toadstools :)
ReplyDeleteOhhhh party time is coming!! :D
ReplyDeleteYou should be cheerful and celebrate it at the most!!! :D
I love floss as well, maybe because I'm a cross stitcher addicted hehehe I love DMC 800 =)
Happy Birthday! My favorite color is a bright raspberryish pink like 601
ReplyDeleteOddly enough I've never sewed anything with it though-I should do something to fix that!
I am a floss junkie (along with being a paper junkie) - I used to do cross stictch back in my wild high school days :)I love anything in the blues - but I'll pick the bright 995 for this one :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Burfday!! My bday is tomorrow! Floss is so addictive. It's the color. It's got to be the endless array of colors. I have so many favorites, to choose just one is so difficult. I just bought a handful a couple of days ago. I love them all. They are all DMC, 3842,321,728,921,469, and 581. I can't help it. Choosing one just isn't easy. contact info: rbrock32(at)gmail(dot)com

ReplyDeletei love parakeet! such a cheery color!
ReplyDeleteI'm always drawn to periwinkle.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday week! What a nice gift for US.
ReplyDeleteI surely wish you liked Cosmo floss. I spend a lot of time with the palettes you put up, converting DMC to Cosmo. But I persevere.
I like the blue greens a lot. For instance DMC534 (Cosmo3816) There are a bunch of them in that family that I use a lot.
For me, colors don't exist in isolation, so I love groups or pairings of colors. (Your dmc palettes were fun to explore.) I have to know what that silk floss is in your first photo! I love the whole group.
ReplyDeleteA color combination that had been swirling in my head, and I finally used to embroider a wallet, is raisin and burnt orange. Then I saw a blood pressure cuff in the Dr's office, a gorgeous steely dark blue with a rusty brownish orange, and I couldn't take my eyes off it. I'm not alone in this, right?
Wishing you a fantastic birthday and a wonderful year! Thanks for all the fun and beautiful things you share.
Happy Birthday Mollie! Thanks for a chance at those gorgeous colors! They make me smile to see them, I find my floss stash is growing almost as much as my fabric stash but it fits in a drawer so much easier! I am loving the combination of DMC's 962 and 938 pink and brown. I am currently working on Bunny Hill's pattern Rabbits Prefer Embroidery in those two colors.
ReplyDeletei would love to make friendship bracelets and friendship necklaces!! i love orange and red and green, yellow, grey! oooh all the colours are great! so obsessed with floss!!!!

Oh, how I love embroidery threads, as well.
ReplyDeleteI'm not big into variegated, but I DO love Valdani's #P11 - Aged Black. It works up beautifully and can read as black or navy. And I adore the grays and browns mixed in.
Your signature colors are beautiful...perhaps I should come up with my own since I tend towards a particular set of colors. :)
erintame [at] me [dot] com

ReplyDeleteA bouquet of floss! Ack! Perfect! I love redwork - so DMC #321 is on the tippy top of my lift. I buy giant handfuls at a time. And, then spend hours pulling from the floss wall because it's like being in a candy store!

ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, how can I pick just one color? Let's see...I seem to be drawn to jewel tones lately, especially dark aqua and magenta. I'm also loving the glo-in-the-dark stuff, but I haven't actually stitched anything with it yet. Thanks for the giveaway! *fingers crossed*
ReplyDeleteleahthezombie at gmail dot com
Happy Birthday to you (in advance)
ReplyDeleteI'm not one to embroider anything but the beautiful colors made we want to pick up a needle. Hope you have a great week.
Happy birthday! I might start having a birthweek too. My favourite colour is green as there is such a wide spectrum from luscious lime, to subtle sage, deep dark emerald and all inbetween.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday / Feliz Cumpleaños!!! Actually I don't have a favourite colour because I love the all, they remind me when I used to make friendship bracelets with my friends.... :))

ReplyDeleteI just adore DMC 311 - Navy Blue MD, but my favorite is to hold all the pretty colors in my hand at once just like your pic.
Wow! This is wonderful! I love flosses and cannot get enough colors!
ReplyDeleteLHY5@yahoo.com
Oh my gosh! So many colors! How could one possible pick? I love the earthy colors. Browns, greens, a little bit of red. Have you ever noticed no matter how much floss you have, when you get ready to do a project you never have the colors you need?!
ReplyDeleteusagypsy@hotmail.com
bright colors and neon are great
ReplyDeleteI love the earthy colors!
ReplyDeletePurple! I have an array of purples that still surprises even me.
ReplyDeleteI love #666- bright red, though I call it cartoon devil red. It makes me smile every time I see it. Thank you for the lovely giveaway.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite embroidery floss color is bright red. I like to embroider a little heart on the butts of stuffed things I make, and it makes me laugh. :>
ReplyDeleteMy current favorite is Ultra Light Avocado Green, DMC 472. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI love anything silk. It's like stitching with butter. (Buttah!) I wish the pocketbook would permit me to stitch in all silk. Alas, that is not to be. Also, I can't ever seem to get enough purples.
ReplyDeleteA girl can never have too many threads.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I've been a little obsessed with embroidery floss myself - just picked up a vintage cross-stitch kit that I can't wait to finish!
ReplyDeleteMy current favorites are the tans and camels, so I'd say 370-372!
Thanks for the giveaway.

ReplyDeleteI love white embroidery, and my favourite is a portuguese one: Palmeira, nº 12.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Portugal.
helenafrontini@hotmail.com
Oh I can't choose just *one* color, because what makes colors so wonderful is combining them so they'll compliment each other... and how the favorites change with the weather and the light and the mood and the things around you... But right now, I'd start putting things together with *orange*, so I guess that is the favorite right now :)
ReplyDeleteOo lovely! I'm a big fan of teal, all different shades, but definitely the deep, rich ones.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday. so good to know that other people LOVE floss.
ReplyDeleteI am a HUGE fan of Snow White ... not just "White", it has to have the "Snow" - It's just so pure and clean and I love to use it for border stitches - It outlines everything perfectly! PS - My birthday is Wednesday :) So happy birthday to us both!!
ReplyDeletehappy birthday! we have 'birthday week' in our house too because me and my boyfriend have our birthdays in the same week and we take a week off work and hang out.
ReplyDeleteanyway... i love floss too! i like reds....x
Hi
ReplyDeleteI am working just naw with Anchor #46, red but a darker red, I love it.
Happy Birthday Week :) My favorite color is peacock blue, but I'm not sure what the DMC color is because my cat destroyed the black wrapper :(
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! I have to say that a good mustard yellow is my favorite color, especially when paired with a plum or olive.
ReplyDeleteI love all sorts of blues and greens - anything except turquoise or olive green.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a wonderful birthday! I am in love with floss. I seriously have to avoid the racks at the craft store so that I'm not tempted to grab a handful of them as I pass by. By far, my favorite DMC color is 3845. It is such a bright, pretty color that I have bought more than I think I'll ever use just so I always have some!
ReplyDeleteI love floss. Right now I'm am drawn in by all the different shades of purple that I can get!
ReplyDeletenacoleknitz@yahoo.com
I feel so relieved that I am not alone in my love for floss! I always feel kind of nerdy, but here there's no need to! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color is a deep bright red! (for instance DMC 817)
regina@hetisvastmislukt.nl
I think I'm going to start saying my fav color is rainbow because I love them all. Yellow is my happy color so def a fav...I'm a huge fan of white, its my go to start with it color. I doodled some snowflakes that I want to stitch mini hoops for the tree and I'm trying to decide if I want to do white with different color snowflakes (rainbow;) or red with white snowflakes...which would you do?
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing some lovely rainbow floss with one of us :)
-annabelle
Happy birthday! From one november child to another.
ReplyDeleteEmbroidery floss is lovely! Thankfully not (yet?) as obsessed with floss colours as with seed bead colours -- I'm a real junkie when it comes to that... But seeing a whole DMC display with every imaginable nuance of every colour on the colour wheel? *drool*
When I recently rediscovered embroidery, I had to dig out my old stash and found some gorgeous greens and dark purples from DMC, Puppet and Achor. Especially one purple from Anchor, where I've lost the colour no. But my real faves at the moment are probably some of the luxurious space-dyed embroidery threads I picked up when buying textured yarns and cords for my jewellery. Perle cotton from Jennifer Gail Threads (colour: Moorland). 12 strand silk (colour -05), silk with flames (-44) and linen (-27) from Stef Francis. Or maybe my metallic copper floss from DMC or my lovely, soft skein of Dansk blomstergarn (Danish Flower Thread). Colour 323, I think. Argh, it's so hard to pick just one with so many gorgeous threads and colours to choose between! And that's just choosing between the colours in my tiny stash -- imagine if I also added all the gorgeous colours I want after seeing them on colour charts online...
[Silly me has vowed to buy organic when shopping cotton when possible. Darn hard to do with embroidery floss. Not impossible, but you loose all the beautiful colours mentioned here -- and it's expensive.]
Sorry for the long comment. I'm incapable of writing short ones apparently...
I don't have the name of it anymore, but I do absolutely love a variegated thread from DMC that's in pastel greens, blues and pinks.
ReplyDeleteoh goodness a favorite color? that's completely unfair. I'm a complete junky for embroidery floss - last time it took me thirty minutes to pick out a pile of ten colors. They kept sending a store employee back to check on me (I think they thought I must be trying to shoplift some since it was taking so long!!). Lately however, I've been doing embroidered family portraits for Christmas gifts (ala Martha Stewart Living) and there is the peachy pink color that is perfect for the mouth. I just love it. And greens. Anything green.
ReplyDeleteooooo.... pppreeeeettttyy!
ReplyDeletei must say my favorite colors are in the red hues....dark red, wine, cherry red, vintage red....
HAPPY BIRTHDAY WEEK!! =D
ReplyDeleteThe pictures in this post were gorgeous! All that floss made my heart squee!! My absolute favorite color on the planet is green. Light green, dark green, and any shade in between. You'd think I'd be bored with it by now, but I always go back to it. A current favorite that I keep seeing come up in my projects is DMC #3850.
Howdy! first time reader :)
ReplyDeleteI love oranges & blues... I know, weird mix, but they are my favorite colors. I love bright colors the best!
anastaciaknits at gmail dot com
Though my stash is full of DMC, I've found the perfect alternative to black in Anchor's (gasp) 401. It's a perfect dark grey and is equally striking on a natural or white background.
ReplyDeletehappy birthday week! right now i am loving deep, rich, reds, oranges and golds
ReplyDeleteMy favorite embroidery floss colors are the light, soft yellows and oranges. But my favorite at the moment is definitely DMC Floss #744
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Mollie! :)
How lovely!! I am partial to various shades of red and orange, it's difficult to pin it to just one!
ReplyDeleteBut Happy Birthday before I am distracted by the pretty colors again lol....
i have yet to know colors or numbers since i am just on the precipice of acutally embroidering, but i love anything blue or green! hope i get this bundle - it would certainly kick me into trying it out a lot faster! ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, girlie!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color is a blue-ish (bluish? really? thats how its spelled?) purple, like 341! I tend to use it even when it doesn't actually make sense.
Happy Birthday! It's always hard for me to pick a favorite color, but pink is always at the top of the list! :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color is purple...any embroidery design I do always ends up having some amount of purple in it!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! I just tried out hand quilting for the first time with some variegated #5 perle cotton and I think I'm gonna be hooked! I'm drawn to blues and teals, so that "french wool overdyed" directly under your fortune looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteRED. Simple.
ReplyDeleteYou can NEVER have to much floss!! My favorite are the true colors, red, blue. green. purple--you know like a crayola box of 8.
ReplyDeleteI love pink, any shade of pink really. It just makes me happy!
ReplyDeletebeaniest17(at)hotmail(dot)com
Happy Birthday Week and thank you for this great giveaway!
I'm incapable of picking ONE favorite colors, but I'm almost always drawn to pinks, blues, purples, and greens!
ReplyDeleteI looooove DMC 4210!!! By far my favourite!
ReplyDeletelindz.james86(at)gmail(dot)com
I am loving most any shade of blue. DMC is the floss I see where I shop. I love your fortune cookie saying. If I had a shop like that at my disposal, I can assure I would probably have to have one of each thing. I am not ashamed that I could be a floss glutton either. :-) Happy Birthday and Happy Thanksgiving. Just realized my 39th anniversary is tomorrow. Gotta think of some way to celebrate.
ReplyDeleteI love all colours that are ocean related..sea-green, aqua, turquoise...thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeletePlease don't enter me in the giveaway--I have my own history of loving floss, and have a large stash up in our guest room. (Trundle beds minus the extra bed are a wonderful hiding place.)
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to wish you a happy birthday week. I hope it brings with it many reminders of reasons to be celebrating.

ReplyDeleteMy favorites tend to be pale yellows. I also really like the subtlty of white on white embroidery.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! I love colours, yes, all colours. When I can't decide, I'll go for variegated colours!
ReplyDeleteI always get entranced by all the different and beautiful colors of floss. However, I find that I gravitate to almost neon colors. Like I LOVE 894- Very Light Carnation.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! say that in your best Oprah voice.
ReplyDeleteI love the colors in the first photo. Earthy tones of yellow, orange and dark green.
I love the silver floss. It makes some cross stitch even more beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!
My favourite colour is DMC 340 - I use it about 3 times as much as any other colour.
ReplyDeleteJean Harnden
perriwinkle.sunshine@shaw.ca
I love all the shades of red - especially dark reds, and doubly so if they're variegated! The variegation gives a nice twist to traditional-style one-colour samplers, especially if theyr'e subversive ones. ;)
ReplyDeleteI would have to say I an always drawn to shades of blue, all blues
ReplyDeleteMine has to be turquoise, I just love it! Everytime i see something turquoise it just makes me smile.
ReplyDeletesammy.malcolm@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteLovely. Yes I can't stop to look at them. Thanks for the lovely give away! I mostly use a dark red like a good red wine colour.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a favorite color yet. I have just begun to dabble in embroidery, but I find myself drawn to soft pastels right now. Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeletesweeney.susanna@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteOh, such a pretty post! My favorite is any shade of periwinkle blue. I love to mix it with silver and embroider on my felted rocks. Really, though I am in love with all colors, it is hard to pick just one. I totally get the obsession.
ReplyDeleteThe signature color of the season--reds--all of 'em--she says as she watches a cardinal haunting the branches of the Japanese lilac tree midst dancing snowflakes! Seems appropriate as Asians love that good luck color red:)

I love embroidery floss, and it's pretty much impossible to name which one color is my favorite, but I notice that I seem to pick up a bunch of smokey blues whenever I get new floss
ReplyDeleteThe only thing more tempting than floss are buttons! Happy Birthday to you and almost me too!

Yay what a great giveaway! I love embroidery floss too! I guess I don't have a favorite color. I do use a lot of red in my work.
ReplyDeleteRight now I'm working on a little bird, inspired by Aneela, at http://comfortstitching.typepad.co.uk/comfortstitching/2011/11/overload.html.

ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful bunch of flowers no I mean floss. I use DMC when I can get out to buy it. I get someone to go buy floss for me all I do is tell them the colors I need and they don't always buy DMC so I always take what they bring and thank them because it is very nice to have someone to do things any more. I love Teal but it comes in so many shades, why i don't know.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! I just turned 30 and my husband 'surprised' me with some candles in a stick of butter. *sigh* Like all men, he's a work in progress.... I love him & am celebrating this weekend with a big party, I hope you have a great one.
ReplyDeleteFav colors? I love all the pinks, girly colors.
I love, love, love floss and can spend alot of time drooling over the colour selection!! I don't really have a favorite colour but I favour anything blue.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to pick a favorite color, then turquoise. But love most others
ReplyDeleteHmmm....I'm having a thing for purples, greens, and blues right now, and any combination of them. I am just getting all my kids (all boys) and boyfriend into cross stitching.
ReplyDeleteDMC Green, 3818 I think is the number.Green is my favorite color, but I love most of the colors. Anything that reminds me of trees and the outdoors!

ReplyDeleteEmbroidery flosses and pearl cottons are one of my secret addictions! Or maybe it's not a secret any more, the people at the needlework shop have known me by name for YEARS. ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you for having a giveaway for your birthday!
I am in the search for the perfect antique blue and red for blue/ redwork so I have multitude of those. but my favourite is green - all possible shades!!! I'd love to try slightly silky ones. I also found wool skeins from 1950 (charity shop- together with frame and unfinished crewel project)and I am itchy to try them.

Happy birthday! I have never been to your blog before now although I have loved your designs on pinterest! I'm so excited to be here! I stink at picking favorites, completely stink at it. But. Here goes anyway. :) I love DMC 740 and buy it often for felt projects. I just bought DMC 3846 because it just looked so happy I had to bring it home. And I buy DMC 436 all the time as it's a nice cookie sort of brown. Thanks for the chance to win some luscious colors!

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I can't memorize those numbers! All I know is 301 is black. I think it's 301, right? Or 310?? Jeepers. And I'm a bookkeeper.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, I love the bright green one. :)

Ah such goodness. I love floss like I love flowers, colorful chickens, crazy varieties of colorful gourds and of course, fabric! Currently, oranges are my fave for the autumn harvest.
ReplyDeleteAnything in green i love :) especially an olive green :)
ReplyDeleteGreen! Any green! I have even come around to loving neon green. And blues and purples. Love.

My tastes lie to the colors of nature and autumn. My favorite green (if you were to see my house deocr you would understand) is the DMC family of 500-504. Pair that with rusts and deep browns, then lighten with touches of ecru and they make my heart sing. It is amazing what other colors I can add to this combo based on the current holiday and it still looks good.
ReplyDeletePurple! Anything purple, especially dark purple. I just used the last of some of my purple floss today, which made me sad, but now I get to go buy more. :D
ReplyDeleteI love the cerise embroidery thread..so vibrant and inspiring on a cold autumn day!
ReplyDeleteRed, red, and more red, especially paired with an autumnal palette.
ReplyDeleteI am obsessed with violet recently. But it starts to feel like too much, so looking for a new passion :)

Right nmow I am in love with turquoise DMC 996. I am new to Crazy Quilting and Embroidery and I am loving it.
ReplyDeleteI have too many faves. Right now it's DMC 957!
ReplyDeleteOh man, picking a fav color is like picking a favorite dessert :0 Well, dessert would probably be easier :). I took all my labels off my floss and do not have a good numbering system yet, so I will tell you the color- it's a bright sunshine yellow! It makes me smile to see it- and it's DMC, of course!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteMy current favourite is red - DMC 666
