downloading the nutcracker...

When I was a little girl, I loved ballet. And I really loved Carroll Ballard's Nutcracker: The Motion Picture, probably because of Maurice Sendak's amazing illustrations throughout. (Yes, even as a child I noticed this sort of thing!) Last night I went to look and see if we had it on DVD, and guess what? This classic isn't available on DVD!

Of course, I was disappointed. I found a bunch of clips on Fancast/Hulu, but I want to watch the entire film. Fortunately, both Amazon and iTunes have it available to download. Unfortunately, I'm still a little behind when it comes to this technology. I've never downloaded a movie before. Music, yes. Movies, no.

This is where you come in. Have you downloaded full-length movies from either or both of these sources? Do you have any insights for me? Is one of them better than another? Would I be able to burn the downloaded copy onto a disc so that I don't have to watch at my computer?

Help! I really need a Nutcracker ballet fix soon!

I've purchased and downloaded video from Amazon. Quality-wise, I've been happy with them and they're easy to use. As far as copying videos goes, they do allow you to save a copy on a disc for back-up purposes, but you won't be able to view it like a normal DVD. You have to follow a set of steps to make the file viewable. They do allow you to download your videos onto a portable media player (if you have one) for watching "on the go." They also have an option to let you play it from your TV if you have one of those streaming devices (like the Roku). Here's a link to their Video support page:

I've never downloaded video from iTunes, so I can't weigh in on that... but I'm sure they have a support page, too.

    I hope that helps. :)

  2. Either option is good. I've used both sources. As for burning them off, I generally only have luck with avi files when I burn them through a program such as Roxio. There are programs available that can convert files, some are free, some are not. But I've had luck with the free programs. It really depends on how much effort you want to put into it!

  3. I've done itunes once for a movie. But when I burnt it to a disk I could only watch it thru itunes on my computer. So basically I was out money and stuck havin to watch it on a tiny screen.

I've used iTunes for movies. Works great (we have cable tv internet connection and the time for download was only a few minutes. I can watch the movie on my computer or my iTouch. Save it via the usual iTunes save.

  5. I've never purchased a movie in either format, but I must say, that is my favorite version of the Nutcracker too. I've been trying to find it on DVD for several years, but they've never released it. Hopefully they'll release it on DVD soon now that it's available on Amazon and iTunes.
