Thread Bits // My Dumbest Sewing Practice

As a blogger and pattern creator, I've learned a little trick that has lead to a really dumb sewing habit/practice.

The trick is this: Get the project done enough to get a photo, hiding the part that is unfinished.

Why would I do this? Usually it has to do with trying to get a post up before the end of the day, or sometimes it's a rush to get the photos taken before I lose my light. It's never because I don't want to properly finish a project.

Thread Bits // My Dumbest Sewing Practice

Unfortunately, the result is that I have projects that are this close to being done. I mean, seriously. Look at that binding on the top one. We're talking LESS THAN TWO INCHES! The bottom project is a little blanket from an online class I taught a few years ago. All that's left is about 8 inches of ladder stitch where those pins are.

I'm sure I have many more that I've temporarily forgotten about too.

Friends, don't do as I do.

But do tell me about your dumbest sewing or stitching practice. What crazy habit do you need to kick?

  2. I think all of us crafty bloggers have done the same thing! Get it done enough to get the pictures and then start writing! One of the things that I do that I should try to stop doing is this: when I finish a project, I am so excited to move on to the next new project that I don't take the time to put away and clean up after the first project. Before I know it, everything is a mess and nothing is where it belongs and I don't have any space left to work! It's a bad habit that is a direct result of my love of crafting/quilting/crocheting/creating! Please tell me I'm not the only one who does this!

    1. You are DEFINITELY not the only one who does this! I have so many messes like this. You know when people post pics of "beautiful messes"? Ha! Mine may be creative messes, but they are far from beautiful. And unfortunately, I have so many projects coming due that I never manage to ever to dig out and get things back to how they should be!

Mine happens when I get really close to finishing a project.... I start hurrying, just wanting it to finally be done already. And sometimes that causes mistakes or causes it to look messy, etc. It's so dumb that I do that because I've already spent so much time on the project, why try to hurry when I'm nearing the end?? LOL

  4. I get seduced into starting new projects before finishing or even starting projects I thought I was going to do, because you (and others) do your job so well! Before I know it I am downloading patterns or buying materials or searching my stash and just when I might start, up comes something else that looks so attractive and do-able and I am off on another tangent. Not good. There are not enough rainy days of snowy days here in Boston for me to attend to the best or my intentions!

  5. I start new projects without cleaning up from the last and end up in a total mess, or I cut out too many projects and stack them up to do a marathon sewing job, which I actually hate to do! Then that turns into a mess, too! LOL! I do get a lot done but I really dislike the mess I make !

  7. At least we are not alone. I also have too many projects going at once, some super close to being done, and this causes a big mess and I simply do not work at all well in anything remotely resembling chaos, somewhat OCD soul that I am. This worst is when I am paralyzed by something really stupid, like finding a pink button to fix a doll sweater (yes, aforementioned sweater has been on the sewing table for something like a month where it is in constant danger of being sliced by the rotary cutter)

  10. See the labels of all the skin Skin Care Review products. Replennage Eye Cream You will probably realize that these items are mostly filled up with dysfunctional water-content and chemicals. Using substances for your skin could irritate it and make it dried or cause it develop oils to pay for that dryness. The products you're implementing on your skin to improve your appearance could really be making things worse. See the labels of the merchandise you utilize, if you use makeup and get rid of any dust- based makeup since your pores can clog.
