weaving hearts and crafty connections

WovenHeart

My family is Swedish, and we have a lot of Scandinavian items around. I've made a few things in keeping with the family heritage, and I'm always looking for more projects in this style. And yes, this includes IKEA. Danish woven hearts are a classic, and I've been looking at unique ways to make them.

I saw this vinyl version (so cool!), these fuse bead hearts (in Danish!), and a quick look on Pinterest turned up all kinds of detailed designs that I never thought possible.

But I thought that maybe I'd give it a try with fabric. To make it easier to work with and to give the finished heart some structure, I fused the fabric to mid-weight interfacing. Then I just used a basic template I found online and wove using the standard instructions.

I love it!

But what should I do with it? Should I add a handle? Something else? Do I need to make more and use them together?

I'd love to hear your thoughts. And I'd love to just hear from you. As would other readers too, I'm guessing. Let's consider the comments on this post to be a little discussion board.

Share an idea, say hello to each other, and of course, I'll be chatting away as well, weaving a bit of community. And maybe more hearts!

  1. I think it would be cool if you made a bunch of them and made a garland, and then entwined the garland around a string of white Christmas lights.

I think you should put a string through them & hang them on the ceiling as decorations.

  3. No ideas here - but I've been thinking of doing this with felt, embroidering it all pretty first, of course. I'm eager to hear what people suggest!

    1. Sounds like a lot of work. So...perfect! I considered adding some stitching to this one too, though I was looking for simple this time around. If I make a bunch for a garland, I'll have already hopped over quick!

  5. Cute! I've seen them made with paper, but never thought about using fabric. Felt would be cute too. I think you could put lightweight fusing on the back and then attach to a circle and make a cute pin cushion. Might have to use some of that Fray Not on the strips so they wouldn't fray, but that would be cute. Could also attach to the top of one of those paper mache boxes and make a trinket box. :)

    1. It's gets me thinking that you sew an insert that is stuffed, then stich this closed to make a mini pillow. Or maybe make one like this but bigger!

  9. When I lived in the dorms in college, I made a bunch of these out of paper and put chocolate kisses in them for Valentine's Day. All the girls on my floor just loved them. Wish I had thought to make them out of fabric so they lasted.

I made these with my daughter in 4H one year and the way they are made they make a cute little bag that you can put things in and give them to people for Valentines day or Easter, They are really neat for May day and can be made in any color for any holiday.

    1. I usually only think of them for Christmas and Valentine's Day. But I love the idea of Easter, May Day, and other times. Thanks!

  11. Your heart just makes me smile! You are so clever making it out of fabric. I remember teaching these at a workshop at my children's elementary school years ago. I think these would be perfect for a quilt as an appliqué block with an alternating simple block. Fun to play with!

  12. Since these actually will hold things, you could even make them big enough to hold mail! Or maybe use it as a way to encourage leaving sweet notes for the people in your family. Love this!

What a super fun post. Everybody has such great ideas! This Christmas I made some of these out of felt and made a little felt Nisse (Danish elf) to put inside each one. My 5 year old loved playing with them over the holiday. The fabric one you made is so cheery --- How heavy are they? I wonder if you had a handful, they could be made into a simple mobile?

    1. They aren't super heavy, so I'm betting that a mobile would work! They could even be done in different sizes, which would look really pretty.

And your little elves sound adorable!
