Mollie Makes Haberdashery

Do you ever notice that in the United States we are missing out on fantastic words like "haberdashery"? Instead we have "notions". It just doesn't have the same flair to it. Thankfully, there are magazines from England, such as Mollie Makes, to bring some charm and sophistication to our crafting.

Let me just insert here that Mollie Makes isn't my magazine, even though it bears my name and is exactly the magazine I would have like to have created. Other than being honored to have projects included every so often, I'm not affiliated with them...I just really, really like the publication!

But let's get back to the haberdashery. Along with writing about these small sewing, stitching and crafting supplies and tools, Mollie Makes also has some of their own items made specifically for their readers. Really, they aren't too different from what you might find in a shop, but they do have something special about them.

The tools are my favorite because, can you believe it? This crochet hook came with an issue of the magazine! US periodicals just can't compare.

Look closer and you see that the handle is imprinted with the Mollie Makes logo. Think about this. My name is Mollie and I make. IT'S AS THOUGH THIS CROCHET HOOK WAS MADE FOR ME!!!!

How about these sweet embroidery scissors that came in this delightful packaging?

THEY HAVE AN "M" ON THEM THAT IS ALMOST EXACTLY HOW I SIGN THE "M" IN MY NAME!!!

Okay, I'll stop yelling now. Things like this just get me a little excited. Clearly.

But whether you name is Mollie or not, whether your name starts with "M" or not, I think you'll agree that these are fun little gifts to receive along with a copy of your favorite magazine. Also, could we please try to bring "haberdashery" to America? Thank you.

Haberdashery. You hear that word regularly in the beginning parts of the PBS show "Are You Being Served". You know, the British show about the store.

  3. I totally agree about "haberdashery"! Love that word! LOL And yes, the UK craft mags are the best, one reason being the extra goodies that come with each magazine! Every time I see Mollie Makes, I think of you and how it's perfect for you.... if my name was Mollie, or even started with an M, I'd be super excited too!!! :)

  4. I'm always talking about how Harry S. Truman was a haberdasher from Missouri. He was actually the only president of the last century not to be an Ivy League graduate.

  5. Ha! When I lived in Germany years ago, I was so tickled that there was a brand of school supplies for kids sold there called McNeill (my last name, spelled just the same way). I can tell you I bought up all sorts of stuff for everyone in my family. So silly, we are!

  6. I love that everything has your name on it! Ha! That is such fun. :) UK craft magazines really do have it all over American ones. Sometimes I flinch a bit at the price, but then I find they provide such pleasure, they are worth every penny—especially considering the goodies they so often include! Amazing.

Another "Are You Being Served?" fan here, too. Yes, let's begin saying "haberdashery"!

    1. Yes we can! It's a bit more expensive though. I get mine by doing a little subscription swap with a friend in Devon. She has Uppercase magazine sent here, and I have Mollie Makes sent to her. We read them, then mail them to each other. Do we save money this way? I'm not sure, but it's fun!

  10. I agree! We need to add-back-in those classy words we've abandoned in the States. (I picked up a "Mollie Makes" here in Australia - LOVE it!) As we visit the Aussies, I'm impressed with how well things are expressed here...
