25 crafts of christmas // embroidery hoop

This December we're looking at 25 Crafts of Chirstmas...or more specifically, craft supplies and tools and the things you can make with them.

With all of the embroidery that I do, it should be no surprise that embroidery hoops made my list. And that's what today's craft entails!

Hoops

Embroidery hoops come in different sizes, materials, and even different shapes. I love them all! But what may be a surprise is that I decided to share an ornament project that someone else made using embroidery hoops.

Most of the time I use hoops to hold embroidery, but for this super sweet decoration, Abby Glassenberg put the hoop in the background. It's there doing a really important job: to put a darling bird front and center and show off its sweetness. I love that it's not used traditionally, but yet, it kinda is. Well done, Abby!

Now, go learn how to make a Bird in the Hoop Ornament, and tell Abby hello while you're there. Oh, and if you are looking to order hoops online, I recently found Thread the Needle for nice prices...especially on shipping!

  3. Thank you so much for the link to the store! I have been trying to find some cheap ones online.

Speaking of hoops, the only one I have ever used are plastic ones. How are wood and plastics one different? Are they better for different things? Do they affect the material differently?

    1. I haven't tried the all plastic hoops for comparison, but I know that the spring tension hoops stretch things differently.

    2. What do you mean by spring tension? The only ones I have ever used are the screw top ones.

    3. The yellow hoop in the photo is a spring tension hoop. It has a metal piece that fits inside the plastic ring. You squeeze the metal piece to fit it into the hoop. I like my tiny one better than the larger version because the tension holds better.

    4. So, I got some wooden hoops for Christmas, and I wanted to share my thoughts with you. The very first thing I noticed is that the wooden ones are a whole lot lighter than tje plastic hoops. They are also thinner so you work closer to the edge. However the plastic ones seem studier than the wooden ones. (All of the ones I have are screw tops too.)

  5. Making gifties in hoops all the time! Thanks for sharing the cute birdie! I do my stitching in Q-Snaps or tension adjustable hoops.

  6. I love how hoops allow my stitching to be the best it can be.

  7. I wanted to thank you for the link to the embroidery hoops. I have used both plastic and wood hoops -- the tension is definitely different.
