project: Felt Arrow Wall Charm

Felt Arrow Hanging Valentine

How would you like to receive a Valentine that is also decor you can display and enjoy? I think I'd like that a lot, so this year I'm sending out some special wall charm Valentines!

Making arrows with felt and wood of some kind is nothing new, but I had a specific look in mind for mine. The lovely Kimberly spotted this feather wall charm on one of my pin boards, and was super sweet to get it for me. (I love it!) Then she pointed out the arrow version they worked up (but that isn't available online). These were my inspiration.

Of course, mine would need to be easy to make without a saw...and it would need the addition of a Wild Olive face! Thus, the felt arrow wall charm was born! (Can you tell I've been watching some Powerpuff Girls lately?)

You will need:

Felt
Jumbo Craft Stick
Hot Glue Gun
Pearl Cotton or Thin String
Arrow Pattern PDF

For each arrow, cut out two points and two fletchings (that's what the tail part is called...you learn something everyday!). You don't need to cut the fringe into the fletchings yet. Embroider a face onto one of the points.

Working quickly, apply a thin layer of hot glue to one end of the craft stick. Stick it down onto the back of the first point. When you're hot glueing everything on the arrow, don't use too much, otherwise it will show through the felt, which you don't want.

Repeat this, adding glue to the other side of the same end of the craft stick. Place the other point on top.

Run a thin line of hot glue around the edge, working one side at a time. If you try to do the whole line, it will harden before you can get it all properly stuck in place.

It's very likely that the front and back won't match up exactly. That's okay! Just trim away the little bits that are showing from the other side.

At the other end of the arrow, start by glueing down the stick to one fletching. Then, add glue to the other side of the craft stick, plus a bit of glue on the felt at the end of the craft stick. Place the second fletching on top.

For this end, you won't glue around the edge. Instead, cut slits on the edges as shown on the template.

Thread a needle with pearl cotton and stitch through the tip of the point. Tie a knot to make a hanger.

Now your charm is ready to mail or hang! It's just the right size to fit into a business size envelope! You may want to add a piece of thin cardboard (like from a recycled cereal box) to give it some extra protection when mailing. Imagine the fun of finding one of these in your mailbox!

By the way, the stitched face, while very Wild Olive, is optional. I also made a version with plain felt, where I painted the word "true" on a blue arrow. And I think this is just the start of the options on this. You could fuse fabric to the felt for patterned arrows, stitch swirls and lines on the felt, do more with paint, change the size...and on and on!

  1. I think I love the felt version more! (Everything's better with a tiny face!) Thanks for the shout out--I'm glad you like the feather...I still need to hang mine up. :)

    1. If you're fabric challenged, I'm link challenged! The file was all uploaded, and I put the text in for it, but never linked. All fixed now, and an extra place to grab it is at the bottom of the post now too.
