d is for dk

Craft

Continuing alphabet month, today D is for DK. No, that's not Donkey Kong, but rather, a publisher of wonderful books, and with it, a book review!

Growing up, I always loved Dorling Kindersley, or DK books. LOVED them. So when someone from DK contacted me about reviewing one of their new titles, I jumped at the opportunity. Craft is exactly what you love and expect from DK. Bright and uncluttered photos paired with clear and easy-to-understand instructions make this an excellent resource for learning new craft techniques.

In fact, when looking through this, I realized that it's most likely the DK books of my childhood that influenced my own style of craft presentation (at least, it's what I want my photography and instruction to be like!).

Craft

One of my favorite things about the art and craft books from DK has always been the supplies pages. Each item is shown without brands (as I kid, I wondered where they got those plain glue sticks!), and each has a concise description.

Craft is divided into different types of crafts, and each section has pages of the tools and supplies shown in this manner. Just looking at these pages alone was an educational experience for me!

Within each of the types of craft, they present specific techniques. Following the technique pages, there's a project so you can try it out. I really like that you can learn something new and apply it, but that the two things aren't only tied directly to each other.

For example, you can learn block printing in general, including some variations, but that it isn't just about how to make the apron with fish on it. The same format goes for all of the techniques and projects throughout the book.

Here's a project that takes me back. I'm pretty sure that I've always wanted to do marbling, but never have. Maybe this is my chance?

For the most part, I'd say that Craft presents beginner to intermediate level projects. However, because it covers so many topics, I felt like there were lots of things that I've never done before but would like to try. Friends...I've been crafting for most of my life...so that says a lot about how much good content is in here.

Craft covers applique and some patchwork, paper crafts (lots of them!), beading and jewelry making, wire work, eco crafts (including rag rugs!), soap and candle making, mosaics, ceramic painting and more. Of course, it can't teach you everything, but it's a great guide for picking up some new craft ideas.

Craft

As an embroiderer, I was hoping to see some favorite stitches presented, but the only embroidery is bead embroidery. Guess what? I've never done that! So there's something new even in my favorite craft for me to learn! And how precious is this cherry sweater?

DK still has my vote for a favorite publisher, even now that I'm grown up! And if you're looking to learn something new, check out Craft.

Disclosure: This book was provided to me free of charge, and the links to Craft are affiliate links, but the opinions are all my own.
