make: fall coasters (with the cutest fall fabric!)
Do you see this fabric? Do you see the leaves, foxes and squirrels? Isn't it the cutest?
I bought this on clearance at JoAnn's this summer. I didn't have a project in mind, but I saw it and had to buy a bunch. Truthfully, I was thinking of you when I saw it. I knew that this fabric was blog-worthy, and that made it a must-buy. I have like, 2 yards or so, and so I've come up with a project that will really use a lot of it up.
Coasters! Wait...this only uses a tiny bit! Oh well, I guess I'll have to make lots and lots more lovely things with this fabric! If you have some cute fall fabric, perhaps you'd like to make some too!
Here's what you need:
Cute fall fabric - about 4x4" per coaster
Felt - wool or wool blend is my favorite - 2 pieces about 4x4" per coaster
Fusible web - 2 pieces about 4x4" per coaster
Embroidery floss
Large drinking glass (for making a circle)
We're using two layers of felt to help make these coasters a little more substantial. Layer the squares of felt, fabric and fusible web as shown. Line them all up, and fuse them following the instructions on your fusible web. (I thought I ruined mine because peeling the paper off proved more tricky than I anticipated. It came off fine when I worked with it.)
Use a glass to trace a circle onto the fabric. (I used a water-soluble pen, and it worked so well!)
Cut out the coaster.
Stitch around the edge with a whip stitch. It adds a bit of security to the layers, but it's really there to look pretty!
Now you're ready to enjoy a nice big cup of coffee (or tea, or cider, or hot chocolate), and admire your cute fall fabric. You might not have squirrels and foxes on yours, but I'm sure it's cute, right? And you'll still have some left over for another fall project.
Oh, and if you like these coasters, you'll probably love what I have coming on Thursday! It's a special project for Sherry Turley's Fall Fest, so be sure to check in!
