make: color chains

color chains
On Saturday, I wrote about describing moods with colors...specifically embroidery floss colors. I loved the idea so much that I wanted a way to wear the colors that I'm feeling.

These chains of color aren't really a new idea, but I took these ribbon necklaces and this necklace that my sister bought, and made it my own. You can too, because they are so easy to make...you'll want them in all of your favorite floss colors!

The chain is fairly fine (I've used a couple sizes) and I buy in it long lengths (60+") so I can cut it into several necklaces.
color chains
Cut a piece of floss that is about 8 inches longer than your chain. Tie the floss onto one end of the chain with a really good double knot. You may want to secure it with a dab of glue/sealer.
color chains
Thread the floss through a needle, and begin weaving it through the chain. For this one, I've gone every other link, but you can alter this.

When you get to the other end, tie a double knot as before. Connect the two ends of the chain with a clasp. If the necklace is long enough to slip over your head, you can also just use a jump ring.
color chains
I made a few more colors...these ones are woven every three links.

Wear them individually or stack them up as my sweet sister is modeling here. So far, I haven't given her any...after all, she did buy that amazing necklace and didn't even think of me!
bracelets
Speaking of my sister, she's been making these bracelets from this tutorial. Instead of the waxed linen cord, she's been using pearl cotton with great success. It's cheaper and comes in tons of colors...and I have a lot of it around here. Well, I used to...Anna has raided my stash!

  4. Very cute! I love how delicate the necklaces look. And I like how nice they look when worn together.

I've made similar necklaces a couple of times, the latest being a patinated brass chain with space-dyed rayon bouclé woven into twice. The undulating thread sort of "matched" the shape of the round chain links.

Have you tried using jewellery chain in embroidery? It can give a very cool effect to, say, a unisex cuff bracelet (my sis loves doing that). A flat chain like a flattened curb chain or similar is the easiest to tack down without visible stitches. I haven't seen anyone mixing "chain embroidery" with embroidery floss, but seeing your necklaces I feel like that would be an interesting idea to experiment a little with.

  5. maneki: I've added real chain into some embroidery, and loved it! But I do love the idea of the combination of that with chain stitch...I'll have to give it a try!
