8 a day

8 a Day

You see, yesterday, it finally got warm around here. I mean, we've seen signs of spring, but yesterday it was humid and suddenly summer-like. When the weather is like this, it's easy for me to drink plenty of water. I enjoy drinking water in the summer. But in the winter? I have a really, really hard time.

All the same, when I was hit with the desire to take in more H2O, I was also hit with the idea of creating a little checklist to make sure I'm getting my 8 glasses a day. Maybe you'd also like to check off your daily 8?

It's really not healthy to drink 8 glasses of water a day. You are supposed to get the *equivalent* to 8 glasses as you get a lot from food and the like.

My doctor cut me down to *one* 20 ounce bottle of water a day.

Different people have different needs. eight might be too much for you while being just right for someone else. More water can also help you lose weight. As always the more the merrier!

    2. Recommended daily water intake is HALF your body weight in ounces. Ex: you weigh 196 lbs, you should drink 83 oz of water. (:
[just a little info from a former health & wellness coach]

  2. Good point. The amount of water needed can be different for each person, and even with this list, I'm not a big counter of ounces.

I am, however, a big coffee drinker, which dehydrates...I can't let myself forget the water!

  5. This is awesome! This is perfect for me and my kids too. I heard recently that 65% of school age kids are chronically dehydrated!

  10. Mollie, thanks for sharing!

@ Anonymous, I think that both you and Mollie bring up a good point that everyone has different fluid needs (e.g. people with cardiovascular/renal issues may need less fluids). But, the normal healthy adult should have around 8 glasses of water/day to maintain fluid balance. A good formula that we are taught to use in nursing school is that a person needs this much fluid: weight (kg) x 25-35 mL = daily fluid requirement. This equals about 2200-2700 mL --- 1100-1400 mL of this should come from oral fluid intake (the rest from solid foods/metabolism). (P.S. 1kg = 2.2lbs, 1 fl. oz = 30mL). Sorry to get so scientific here, but the importance of adequate hydration cannot be understated ... especially in the elderly population. I have seen it first hand. Again, everyone is different -- individual variations in metabolism, weight, activity level, diet, medications, health issues, etc., can all contribute to your own personal fluid needs ... but it is very misleading to say that 8 glasses of water a day is "unhealthy" -- that is simply not true!

  12. What a great idea! Maybe this visual reminder will help me move from drinking 8 glasses of Diet Coke a day to 8 glasses of water :)

BTW, I found this post through How About Orange. Can't wait to peruse your site!

  14. Sara, I'm afraid you've been mislead. The 8 a day rule is actually incorrect for most healthy adults. It's a misunderstanding of an old set of health guidelines. If you want more details, take a look at this Scientific American article that discusses the issue:

  16. SO cute!

I actually had to "invent" a 'game' to get myself to drink more water. I decided the 'drinking game' would make it so I'd have to drink some water at every red light. Worked like a charm! And it turned out kind of fun :-)

Mollie, I thought this was really cute. When I printed it and found I had 2 sheets I cut them out, adhered them to a background of scrapbooking paper (cute orange with blue polkadots to reflect your dots as check-off boxes), and laminated them. Now they can be used over and over with a dry-erase marker. I kept one and gave one to my mother-in-law. She likes to keep track of her water intake. And, as mentioned before, her needs are different. She can make the size of her 8 drinks any amount she wants.

  20. Great idea and cute! To save paper you can laminate and use dry erase markers :o)

  26. Adorable and just what I needed to find today for my daughter!
I also like that it doesn't beg for a sticker, just an "x". (Although I'm sure stickers would be fine too ;))
    Thanks!!!
