project: rainbow road coffee cuff
I promised more Mario Kart for Mario Week, and here it is! When we first got Mario Kart 64, I remember needing to spend only limited time playing the Rainbow Road track. I loved it, but it gave me headaches. So sad.
Fortunately, this Rainbow Road is more likely to cure my headaches, because it's wrapped around a coffee cup (can you say "caffeine addiction"?). It's made with slightly funky color sections because funky is better for something like this. And if you don't want to add a star, it would also make a very nice xylophone for your musical friends!
You will need:
Black or dark gray felt
A rainbow of seven colors

Cut the pattern and felt for the cuff first. This will JUST fit a standard disposable cup. If you use anything larger, extend the ends a bit.
Cut apart the pattern for the rainbow pieces one at a time, cutting each piece of felt as you go. This will help keep the pieces straight so they fit right. If they get mixed up, it will still work...it'll be extra funky though. I recommend placing the colors so that yellow will be at one end, away from the star.
Cut out the star from yellow felt and stitch a face on him.
Working from the center out, stitch the rainbow pieces on with running stitch. I like to tie a knot and hide it between the layers.
Continue sewing on the colors, leaving a little space between them.
Place the star in the middle and stitch it on with matching thread.
Overlap the two ends of the cuff piece and pin. I used an overlap of 1/4". Stitch two rows of running stitch to hold it all together.
Now even when life is racing, you'll have a cuff for your coffee to keep you on track!
I hope you've enjoyed Mario Week! This is the end of projects from me, but this isn't game over! I'll still be sharing more of the great links that you have sent my way. Check back tomorrow and keep sharing your own Mario makes!
