make: a mum hairpin

Mum Hairpin

As I was admiring the pot of chrysanthemums on our front porch the other day, I thought, "I need a mum for my hair!" After a bit of thinking, I remembered the marigold pattern in my Garden Gals pattern set, and figured that, done in the right colors, it could become a mum. So I found my wool felt in my favorite mum color (my mom isn't a big fan of this shade...she prefers the burgundy variety), and got to stitching.

Mum Hairpin

Here's what you need:
Wool felt (I used two colors, but one would work)
Tracing paper
Embroidery floss
Large bobby pin
Garden Gals pattern (or another flower embroidery pattern)

Mum Hairpin

Trace the pattern onto tracing paper. Cut outside the pattern line, and use as a template to cut out the felt. Stitch the embroidery design through the paper.

Mum Hairpin

Cut a second piece of felt that is slightly larger than the first. (This is where the second color of felt comes in.) Carefully tear away the the tracing paper.

Mum Hairpin

Cut two small slits in the middle of the backing piece. They should be just large enough to slide the bobby pin through.

Mum Hairpin

Stitch the front and back pieces together.

Mum Hairpin

Slide the bobby pin through the slits in the backing. You can secure the pin with a few stitches or some glue, but pins like this tend to be fairly tight, so it's unlikely that the flower will come off unless you are trying to slide it off.

Mum Hairpin

I'm terrible about hairstyles that require bobby pins to hold things in place, but when the hairpins are just there for decoration, I can handle that. I wore mine yesterday to church, and felt pretty and ready for fall!

  8. I think I got the large bobby pins at Wal-Mart. They are from Goody. And you're never too old to wear flowers in your hair (certainly not at 51!)
