make: a felt yo-yo necklace
This week in my Embroidery Project: All in the Details, one of the projects involves making fabric yo-yos. While they were on my brain, I started thinking that a yo-yo made from felt would be fun, which then led to the idea of wearing said felt yo-yo.
I wore mine yesterday, and loved it! Someone commented that it reminded them of a sand dollar. It's really easy, and only uses a small amount of felt, which means I'll probably be making more them to go with everything!
Here's what you need:
Felt (wool or wool blend make this project look extra-special)
Thread
Thin chain necklace
Cut a 2.5" circle from the felt. In the center, cut two small slits.
Make a yo-yo by sewing around the edge with a running stitch. Do not turn the edges under as you would with a regular yo-yo.
Pull it tight and secure the thread.
Slip the chain through the slits in the back and you're ready to wear it!
You could add a few of these to one chain, or keep it simple with just one. More than some of the other felt jewelry that I've made (which I love!), this one feels so sophisticated. Go make some!

ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful necklaces! And they look fairly simple to make. :) I was hoping to try them out this weekend, but wanted to ask you first - what kind of chain did you use here? If you could just give me the description, that should suffice - that way I can start looking around some of the craft stores here. :) I'm hoping to make these for little birthday gifts and such. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks again for such a lovely idea!
