Beach Shop Embroidery Pattern
Did you forget your sunscreen? Do you need a new swimsuit? Or maybe you're ready to buy a surfboard? Stop by the Kawaii Crossing Beach Shop! This month's free embroidery pattern may be a little later than usual, but it's here!

I kind love this shell-shaped shop, and maybe because it's fun to say. But also because it reminds me a litte bit of Spongebob Squarepants and the cheesy souvenir stores you find on warm-weather vacations. Do I typically buy things there? No. Do I enjoy perusing the odd mix of items they sell? Yes.

And I hope you enjoy stitching this curious little shop and adding it to your collection of Kawaii Crossing patterns.

Happy Stitching!

Kawaii Crossing Bakery Cross Stitch

Well, I finished cross stitching the Kawaii Crossing Bakery, and now I have the free pattern for you!

Let me tell you, this little town is my happy place. And I just want to spend more time here. Like, I want to actually walk down these streets and visit the sewing shop, garden center, and bakery. Because a sweet and cute world is what I'm craving. How about you?

Kawaii Crossing Bakery Cross Stitch

As I added the bakery to my town, I continued stitching the streets a little. Stitching all of this early would make the rest of this a lot easier down the road (get it...streets? down the road?). But I'm adding it bit by bit. At any rate, I love seeing this second row showing up.

A few folks wanted to do theirs all in one long row, which is also fantastic, and I can't wait to see! If that's you, tag me (@molliejohanson) on Instagram and/or use the tag #kawaiicrossing or #wildolivestitchingclub so everyone can also see your work!

Kawaii Crossing Bakery Cross Stitch

Oh, and I over-stitched my green grass, so what you see doesn't match up with the chart. But it may? We shall see as I get started on the June design.

You can grab the updated Kawaii Crossing Stitching Club chart below or work with the individual shop charts, which are under the cross stitch patterns from this year.

Kawaii Crossing Bakery Embroidery Pattern

With sharing both embroidery and cross stitch patterns for the Kawaii Crossing Wild Olive Stitching Clubs, I like to mix it up with which one I'll share first each month. And this time the embroidery folks get their pattern first!

This happy little bakery is all ready for you to embroider. You can add it into the English paper piecing mini quilt design or stitch it large on a tea towel or apron for the kitchen!

When I introduced this bakery, I mentioned that it's inspired by my grandma, and if she were still living, I'd definitely be stitching a kitchen towel for her. In fact, my embroidery journey started with her letting me stitch on her kitchen towels. Over the years, when I'd be helping (and probably baking!) at her house, I'd find one of those towels with my colorful running stitches still in place along the hems.

Oh, and speaking of when I introduced the Kawaii Crossing bakery...I managed to get more yeast! Yay for more baking!

I'm also very excited to share that I have a new Stitching Club in the works! Summer, even staying home, is gonna be stitchy and fun!

pattern // kawaii crossing garden center embroidery pattern

Are you ready to embroider a kawaii garden center? This month's free Kawaii Crossing pattern is here! I really love this little flower pot shop and all its tiny details.

When I was little, I spent a lot of time at Frank's Nursery and Crafts. Did they have those stores by you? I have such happy memories of shopping there. Certainly lots of craft supplies. I even recently used some felt from my stash that still had Frank's price tags on the sheets!

But I also loved walking around outside by the plants. Like many garden centers, they had tiny pea gravel, separated by sidewalks. That pea gravel was my favorite. I used to look through it for "special" rocks and then slip them in my pocket. It's true. And boy did I get in trouble! My parents clearly didn't want me growing up to be a rock and landscaping thief. Ha!

Anyway, without realizing, I added a little yellow flower above the door on this garden center, which may have been a sub-conscious nod to Frank's. They had a similar yellow flower in their logo! But back to the pattern...

The tiny details that make this extra cute will make this a tricky pattern at times, but if you use only one or two strands on the bitty plants (on the shelf out front), that will help. That's for the tiny version that will work for the mini quilt. If you're using the larger version in the PDF those bits shouldn't be a problem.

Now, download the pattern and start stitching!

Kawaii Crossing Garden Center Cross Stitch

It's time to get out in the garden and do some stitching! Okay, so it might still be a little chilly in some places to stitch outdoors, but at least you can cross stitch a garden center and mentally prepare for a new season. My latest Kawaii Crossing pattern is free and ready to download!

I've been adding these new patterns all in a row, and with the garden center, this top row is complete! I'm working mine in three rows, but I've seen some folks change this up a little. Here's the first little lane:

Kawaii Crossing Garden Center Cross Stitch

This is my first time making a larger cross stitch design made up of smaller elements, and I learn a little more with each pattern I add. Thank you for bearing with me. But I have to say I'm having so much fun!

If you're new to this, I'm working with two strands on 16-count Aida. You can grab the entire pattern (so far!) below, or work with the individual shop charts. For those, you'll need to look back through the cross stitch patterns from this year.

the secret to doing it all

Times are weird. Some of us have more time than they used to. Others are busier than ever. And no matter where you land in that spectrum, you may be feeling like you you're not sure what you should be doing. Or even what you can do. Someone reminded me of the embroidery pattern in this post, and it felt appropriate for me to do a quick update here and help folks find it again. So enjoy this post and free embroidery pattern from 2014. Do what you can do.

Waiting to be stitched

The Internet is full of examples of people who appear to be "doing it all," and perhaps they are. You may have even looked at me and asked, "how do you do so much?" Well, today I'm here to share the secret.

Every day there are dozens, hundreds, even thousands of things that call for your attention. Do you tackle all of them? Probably not. Spam filters and caller ID are examples of how we choose to weed out some of the things that we don't need to handle. Once those things are filtered out, we're left with the bigger stuff, and this is where it gets tricky.

In the latest Uppercase magazine newsletter, editor Janine writes about how she does so much: "My day is always a juggle of what is imperative and what I want to be doing, with the must-do always winning out." If you have a job outside the home, that's a must-do. If you're a stay-at-home mom, feeding little ones throughout the day is a must-do. If you freelance craft (like me), meeting deadlines is a must-do.

Everything else falls under things that would be good to do, or that you simply want to do. These are extras.

Squeezing in extras whenever you can is how they happen. Yes, you can try to schedule things with the best organizational strategies, and that may work for some, but Janine from Uppercase has this insight: "What I have learned, though, is that time cannot be controlled. It is basically unmanageable." Another way to say this is "life happens."

And so here's the big secret to doing it all: don't.

Rather, I offer this alternative...

Say yes to fewer things. So no to more things. Choose what's really important for your life...for your soul. Do what you can do, and don't feel bad that you're not doing it all.

I spend a ton of time making things, and I can do that because there's a lot that I don't do. I don't go out with friends often (maybe one Saturday morning a month...if that!). Crafting is now my primary job, but it doesn't pay a huge amount. I don't live in my own apartment, because I choose this work (and time with my family) over that independence. I'm also single, so I have less family responsibilities. I also don't release nearly as many patterns and projects as I would like to.

But it's a lesson I'm still working on. I'd like to think that this post is progress. You see, I had hoped to embroider the design above. I have a hoop with fabric and floss all picked out. I'd like this hanging on my wall as a reminder to do what I can do.

I opted to share my thoughts and not worry about the stitching just yet.

This might not have been the big secret you were looking for, but I hope it gives some hope. It's okay to let some things go. Doing everything, or even just doing more, may not be what you need. You may just need some grace in your days. Do what you can do.

pattern // spongebob's indoors cross stitch chart

Indoors Cross Stitch

Okay, so right now everyone is encouraged to stay home. And some fine folks have started making free patterns to go along with this. Both to express the sentiment and to give you something to work on during your social distancing, sheltering in place, or full-on quarantine. And a song came to mind.

In one of my favorite episodes ever, Spongebob Squarepants sings a song that I've always related to and that is especially appropriate now. It goes like this:

I know of a place where you never get harmed
A magical place with magical charms
Indoors
Indoors
Innnnnndoors!

Since I like staying home AND since I've had to be careful in the sun, it's not unusual for me to sing this. So why wouldn't I make a cross stitch pattern of it?!? To give it a little Spongebob flair, I chose a color palette that feels reminiscent of the show. But you could change it up if you want.

Stay safe friends. Remember that staying home may be less about protecting yourself from COVID-19 and more about protecting those for whom it could be fatal. This is showing love to your neighbors near and far.

pattern // kawaii crossing pizzeria embroidery pattern

Pizzeria Embroidery Pattern

It's embroidery time! This little pizzeria is ready to serve up some stitching fun (and maybe a slice or two). Embroidering pizza is always fun, but I'd like to think it's even better when the pizza is also the pizza shop, right?

So, inside the PDF for this little free pattern, you'll find the small version of the pattern (perfect for making a Kawaii Crossing Mini Quilt) with a color guide and a larger version that you can use for stitching...well...larger things.

What you won't find is a stitch guide because I think you can have fun using the stitches you like. However, if you want some ideas, I usually outline things in back stitch. For thicker lines, I like chain stitch. The pepperoni and mushrooms, and maybe the crust too, would look great in satin stitch. And for the face I always use French knots and a scallop stitch.

When you stitch this, be sure to share your work! Tag me (@molliejohanson) and use the hashtag #wildolivestitchingclub or #kawaiicrossing so everyone can see.

I hope you're hungry because I'm still working on even more pizza goodness for this month. But for now, I'd love to hear what's your favorite pizza topping?

pattern // kawaii crossing pizzeria cross stitch

Kawaii Crossing Cross Stitch Along Pizzeria

On a list of things that I'm grateful for, I recently included cross stitches because stitching this pizzeria pattern really just made me happy! And I hope that the Kawaii Crossing pizza-shaped restaurant makes you happy too!

I'm also excited to show off that I'm officially all caught up from my stitching last month. Woohoo! And just in time because I've been seeing pictures popping up on Instagram showing off progress and fun modifications like stitching on dark fabric to make it a nighttime scene, or changing out the flowers for benches. You all are amazing!

And now you can add to your little town as I have.

By the way, my dad would be very happy with the layout of this happy village. You see, every time he eats pizza, he always goes looking for chocolate as a treat afterward. If he visits the pizzeria, he can stop by the chocolatier next door!

Kawaii Crossing Cross Stitch Along Pizzeria

I can't wait to see your stitches! Be sure to tag me (@molliejohanson) on Instagram and/or use the tag #kawaiicrossing or #wildolivestitchingclub so all can see.

Sharing free patterns is one of my favorite things and I appreciate every kind of support. I'd love it if you tell your friends about my patterns, share my posts on social media, or buy me a coffee via the link below (because I pretty much run on coffee and Jesus!). Thanks, friends!

Chocolatier Embroidery Pattern

Even on leap year, February seems to speed by and before you know it you've nearly run out of month in which to release the newest Kawaii Crossing embroidery pattern. But it's here at last and you can now stitch your very own heart-shaped chocolatier.

We won't talk about Valentine's Day being over because you can always give a heart box of chocolates to someone special.

The pattern PDF includes two sizes. One is small for the EPP mini quilt I planned out (see my previous post for that) and one is large for making a Kawaii Crossing garland. Have I made a tutorial for that yet? NO! I may be running behind in more than one way these days.

I'll keep this post short and chocolatey sweet so I can get to work on things for next month. Because I have a fun design to get drawing!

February's Kawaii Crossing (unfinished) Cross Stitch

It's nearly mid-February, and that means you probably should have thought about a gift for your sweetheart by now. Even if you're your own sweetheart. It also means that I probably should release a new pattern which you could, if you hurry, stitch for your sweetheart (or at least gift yourself some stitching time).

So today I present to you the cross stitch pattern for the Kawaii Crossing Chocolatier! My stitching time has been limited, which you may have surmised from the photo above. Perhaps I need to have a stitching night on the 14th?

I really love the idea of going to a chocolate shop that looks like a box of chocolates, don't you? Also, true story: I considered putting a chocolate fountain in the window of the shop, but I skipped it because I think they're gross. Maybe I watch Augustus Gloop gulping down and falling into chocolate in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory too many times.

Anyway, right next to the sewing shop is the chocolatier, and you can add it to your growing design or stitch it on its own. I'll make you actually click on the PDFs to see what I haven't yet stitched.

Golden Thimble Sewing Shop Embroidery Pattern

Embroidery fans, it's your turn to get started on the Kawaii Crossing patterns for 2020! As you may have seen already, this first design is for a happy little thimble that happens to house a sewing shop. Because every year should start with sewing and crafting and stitching of some kind, right?

Now, I have a tendency to want to do all the things in a very unrealistic sort of way. When I decided to commit to only doing the cross stitch version of each of these patterns each month, I had no idea how hard it would be to resist doing the embroidery too. There's a very real chance that I will stitch up at least a few along the way. But I'm at least trying to start the year by giving myself fewer things to work on.

Which is why you don't see an embroidered example above. In the free pattern below, you'll find the following: a color sample, the pattern, the pattern reversed, and a larger version of the pattern/reversed version. You can stitch the pattern with whatever embroidery stitches you like. I'm partial to back stitch, french knot, scallop stitch, and chain stitch for thicker lines.

The larger pattern size is for making a project idea that I'll share soon. Spoiler: It's a Kawaii Crossing banner! If you want to wait for that, it will be a week or so before I post the tutorial.

The smaller pattern size is for another EPP mini quilt!

Again, I'm not going to be stitching this up (unless I give in!), but I thought it would be fun to make a design you could use. Each embroidery pattern fits on a house shape EPP piece, then they line up to make little rows of shops with roadway pieces. The stripes on the road are a perfect way to quilt this by hand! And of course, you can make the house shapes with the embroidery any color you want. But it could be fun to make it rainbow!

As with all my patterns, be sure to print everything at 100% (or all pieces at the same percentage) so that things match up. If you have any questions, I'll do my best to help you out!

Oh, and for those who asked for the cross stitch patterns as individual charts, here's the link to download the first one! Going forward these will be posted along with the updated larger chart.

pattern // kawaii crossing golden thimble cross stitch

Kawaii Crossing Golden Thimble Cross Stitch

It's time to start stitching at Kawaii Crossing! Okay, so I've actually already been stitching, but now you can join me. And the fun begins with a free cross stitch chart. The first of 12, which really are one big pattern...

Last year I stitched (almost) all the embroidery designs and simply shared the cross stitch patterns. This year I want to stitch the cross stitch because I've really loved this needlework lately. Embroidery fans: fear not, this month's pattern is coming soon and I even have a mini quilt design you can make with EPP.

AND I have another project idea that I'll share soon that works for either the embroidery or the cross stitch patterns. I may be overly ambitious, but I can at least share how these would work, even if I can't make them all myself, right?

But back to the cross stitch. In this free download, you'll see the streets of Kawaii Crossing. They're a little bare right now, with only the Golden Thimble sewing shop along the first lane. But each month this chart will fill in a little more.

The PDF includes all the colors needed for the entire year. It also has those streets and ends so you can work ahead on those if you want. Everything else will fill in kinda like you see with the first one.

I chose natural 16-count Aida for mine, but in hindsight, I sorta wish I'd gone with something like aqua to be the sky. Originally I'd planned on white, but JoAnn Fabric and Crafts threw a wrench in that...a tale for another day. Anyway, I like the slightly smaller count, and I work with two strands for everything, including the backstitch and french knot eyes.

If you don't want to make the whole design, stitching just the thimble shop part of the pattern should be easy enough. But if it would help to have a separate PDF for each shop (like I did with the jam jars last year), please let me know!

UPDATE: Here's the sewing shop on it's own:

Okay! So that's this new pattern for you! I'm really loving where this is going and look forward to sharing each new stop in my Kawaii Crossing series this year!

pattern // december's jar of cranberry conserves

December Jam of the Month Club Embroidery Pattern

Twelve months of jam embroidery patterns? YES! We did it! I mean, almost. It's December and the last pattern, cranberry conserves, is here. You can now finish off your Jam of the Month embroidery and EPP (if you opted to stitch the mini quilt).

Mine isn't quite stitched yet because I also wanted to make a little cranberry conserves felt project that will be posted shortly. So once again you get a picture of my Sulky Sticky Fabri-Solvy pattern all printed and ready for me to stitch. But you also get a pattern so you can stitch yours before I even thread my needle. Hooray!

December Jam of the Month Club Embroidery Pattern

If you listen to the Very Serious Crafts Podcast, you may have heard us talk about the Train of Shame, and that's a little like what I'm sharing here now. These are my still unstitched patterns from the Jam of the Month Club. Yikes! But if you also listen to the latest episode, you'll hear what happened to my plans for making progress on the EPP portion of this.

Let's just say I'm really behind and that feels like the story of my life. I'm not going to dwell on it though.

The big question is now, will I finish or simply get distracted by my (super cute!) plans for 2020? I think we all know how this will go...

pattern // hot pepper jelly and cranberry conserves cross stitch charts

Cross Stitch Supplies

What's this? The last charts for the Jam of the Month Club cross stitch design? It's true. Today I'm sharing both November and December's designs for hot pepper jelly and cranberry conserves. You can stitch them individually or use them in the giant shelf pattern, which is also here as one large chart.

It's just in time for all the free space in your December calendar. What's that? December is super busy? Ah yes, so it is. Or so it can be! But maybe you'll find a few quiet moments to get in some stitching.

One of the things I was surprised by this year is how much I've come to enjoy doing cross stitch. I liked it in theory, but in practice, I was so slow that I lost interest partway through stitching a pattern. Now I'm loving it and wish I had worked on this version all along. Mind you, I'm behind on stitching and assembling embroidery version that I'm doing so maybe it was for the best. And hey! If you liked having a cross stitch version this year, I might do it again for 2020 and I can stitch that!

Christmas Quilt Sampler Cross Stitch Chart

Speaking of stitching, did you see this free Christmas Quilt Sampler pattern I designed for The Spruce Crafts? It's simple and modern and easy to stitch quickly. I hope you'll give it a try!

2019 November Jam of the Month Pattern

It's that time again...time for another new Jam of the Month Club pattern! This photo looks a little different than usual, and that's because I brought my stitching with me on a road trip. I was stitching along in the back seat and HAD to share a bit of my progress here with you. The embroidery for this month is all finished now, but my vacation isn't, so I'm posting it in an unfinished, but still cute state.

Happy stitching!

Want something to listen to as you stitch...or perhaps as you take a road trip of your own? There's a new episode of the Very Serious Crafts Podcast out today!

pattern // grape jam cross stitch chart

2019 October Grape Jam Cross Stitch Pattern

October is nearly over, but I'm squeezing in this month's free Grape Jam cross stitch chart! You can stitch this little jar on its own or add it to the Jam of the Month Club shelves that are very nearly full.

If I'm fully honest, I felt a little lost on how I wanted to present these grapes because I've tried to limit the number of floss colors in here. Another shade of violet might have changed this look, but I stuck with the simple. And just a bit of extra backstitching for the jar shaping.

When I started these cross stitch designs this year, I knew that I wouldn't have time to stitch them all, so they are only in chart form. I've been a very slow cross stitcher and a project of this scale felt far outside of my abilities. Or at least outside of my time constraints. Seriously, for all the cross stitch patterns I'd designed, I don't think of myself as a cross stitcher. Or at least, I didn't until now.

I've actually been stitching more Xs for some other designs I created and I've been LOVING it. I changed from the stabbing method to the sewing method (a topic we'll be covering in episode 22 of the Very Serious Crafts Podcast), and it's changed my whole experience. Now I have more plans for patterns, trying out patterns by other designers, and maybe even tackling the giant shelves. Or at least planning to stitch whatever I go for next year...ha!

Speaking of things that I stitched...

Happy Halloween Cross Stitch Chart

As I'm posting this, it's just a couple days before Halloween, which means you probably won't be finishing this Happy Halloween design I did for The Spruce Crafts this year. But you can still start this and have it ready for next Halloween! Of course, you may be a speed stitcher or use some sort of spooky spell that finishes things fast...and I say go for it!

pattern // october's jar of grape jam

2019 October Jam of the Month Club Pattern

Since I never gave an official welcome to this month, helloooooo October! It's time for a new pattern for a jar of Grape Jam!

I'll be upfront and say that this felt like a controversial decision to make it grape jam instead of jelly. After all, a PB&J is traditionally made with grape jelly. (I mean, that's not my favorite, but it is a classic). As silly as this sounds, it came down to having too many jellies in a row. I needed a jam. And grape jam is an actual thing, which I'd like to think is a little fancier than it's relative, the jelly.

Can you tell that I overthink this sometimes?

Let's get to this pattern, which is already a little late.

If you've been following along with all the Jam of the Month goodness here on my blog this year, you may have noticed that there wasn't a calendar wallpaper for October. This bugs me because I like a complete set. But it was the thing that I had to let go in order to keep everything else going. That's also why I have another unstitched pattern. Sigh.

Thankfully I have a road trip coming up and I plan on stitching so much! I'll be embroidering more and stitching together the mini quilt shelves.

Woohoo!

pattern // apple jelly cross stitch chart

Free AppleJelly Cross Stitch Pattern

I don't think you're ready for this jelly...but maybe you are? If you're cross-stitching the Jam of the Month Wild Olive Stitching Club, then I bet you ARE ready to stitch some apple jelly!

Let's get right to the downloads this month...

Whether you're stitching these as individual designs or working on the giant shelf pattern that's steadily filling up, I hope you're having as much fun stitching them as I am making them.

Cross Stitch Party Pocket Pals

I'm also super excited to show you my latest cross stitch charts for Cross Stitch Crazy Magazine. They're celebrating 20 years as a magazine, so I made some party animals to join in the celebration. This is technically the kids' section, but I'm an adult and still want a guinea pig stitched coming out of my pocket! Find these, plus some adorable Christmas patterns, in issue 260.

pattern // september's jar of apple jelly

2019 September Jam of the Month Embroidery Pattern

Who is ready to stitch some apple jelly? I know I am! Well, actually, I already stitched the apple jelly embroidery pattern today. Obviously, because I was ready!

Most of these have kept to the absolute basics, with only my three go-to stitches: back stitch, French knot, and scallop stitch (a fly stitch variation). For this one, I used those and a few more. Most things are back stitch. Here are the others:

Face: French knots and scallop stitch
Ridges at the top of the lid: straight stitch
Thick line at the bottom of the lid: chain stitch
Scallops around the tag: scallop stitch (note that these lines aren't on the pattern, I just stitched)
Bow loops: lazy daisy

They're still simple stitches, but they do get a little layered up around the top of the tag!

I hope you have as fun stitching this one as I did! Oh, one other thing. I used a darker shade of gray for my lid (169 instead of 168) because I'm working on light gray fabric. Use what you like best for yours!

But now I have a question for you. This month's design was a toss-up for me. Apple jelly or apple butter. Which one is your favorite?
