pattern // emmanuel god with us

Emmanuel - God With Us

This year I realized something. It surprised me, and yet, it also made sense. Are you ready for it?

I could do without Christmas.

Don't get me wrong. I like Christmas. I like making decorations and giving gifts, Nativity scenes and all the music (really!). But if there was no more Christmas celebrations, I think I'd survive.

What I need to celebrate and observe more than Christmas, however, is Advent. Not a little countdown calendar with a piece of chocolate each day, but the season that anticipates the coming of Jesus. Traditionally the weeks leading to Christmas are for preparation of our coming Savior, both remembering Him as an infant, and His promised return.

This year it has helped my heart and my head to think about Jesus' presence. It keeps coming at me as I read books and blogs, and listen to messages and songs. O Come, O Come Emmanuel always stands out. Emmanuel, one of the names of Jesus, means "God with us." Not only God who was with us, or who will be with us. God with us. Now.

It's hard for me to express just how powerful that is to me. I roll it over and over in my head, like kneading bread. And it works its way in. This is how I'm preparing for Christmas and for Him. So I stitched it up into a little hexagon...

Emmanuel - God With Us

...and also made a larger pattern. Maybe you need a reminder that Jesus promised to be with you now and always. Choose one of the designs and stitch that reminder. Keep it around long after Christmas because this isn't something for once a year.

Friends, may you know and experience Jesus' presence this Advent season, and may you find comfort in the God who loves you so much that He sent His only Son. For you.

pattern // walk with me

Walk With Me

Sometimes a particular message keeps coming at me. I see it and hear it everywhere over a period of weeks or months. Does that ever happen to you? For me, it's typically rooted in God's Word. And it's usually something that I need to hear. A lot. For a good reason or reasons.

Nearly a month ago I was at a church service and they asked us to listen to a few verses. To read over them, think on them, and try to discern what we were supposed to hear from God in those words. This is what I heard:

Walk with me. Work with me.

We were reading from The Message, a wonderful paraphrase of the Bible that I love to look to in addition to a traditional translation. Here's the chunk of verses in another version:

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. -Matthew 11:28-30

Life has come into another busy season for me. When I have lots of work to do, I can easily become overwhelmed, which puts me in a bad place. I can forget that work is a blessing, which it is.

But I keep hearing the same message. Come to me. Walk with me. Work with me. Find rest for your soul. My burden is light. And it has changed my attitude. Walking with Jesus, even when life is work, it changes things.

So I made a pattern.

I haven't started stitching yet, but I know that I'm going to want this reminder hanging on my wall. Maybe you will too. I kept the wording simple so it can mean what you want it to mean. But I also hope you also think about what it might mean to walk with Jesus. I'd love to talk with you more about that, so if you ever want to talk, let me know. Seriously. He changes things.

pattern // he is risen indeed

He is Risen Indeed

He is risen!

Easter is THE DAY. This day we celebrate that God's Son, Jesus, came and loved and died for us, and then...he busted out of that grave alive again. The power, grace, forgiveness, and love of God overwhelm me.

And so I choose to follow Jesus. I choose to accept his forgiveness, let myself be covered by his grace and love, and see each and every day as a celebration of my risen Savior.

I drew up this design, not for Easter, but for every day. Because every day He is Risen Indeed! I need to stitch this reminder and live in this light.

Happy Easter, friends! Be blessed and know that you are so very loved.

pattern + project // a new thing banner

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

This banner was begging for me to make it. No really. It sort of planted itself in my brain and I HAD to make it. And then sequins. That might not make sense, but back in December I found that sequins soothe my soul and I jokingly decided that my new year needed more of them. And so, this banner is here to encourage me, and hopefully you too. I'll explain more at the end of this post, but first, let's do some making!

I've included the pattern for the words "I am doing a new thing", but you could very easily make a banner with your own favorite pattern, phrase, or just about anything. Ready? Let's do a new thing!

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

Here's what you need:
Felt
Fabric
Embroidery floss
Sequins
Large skewer or thin dowel rod

Tools:
Sulky Sticky Fabri-Solvy or tracing paper
Scissors
Needle
Rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat (optional, but helpful)
Card stock
Glue stick
Pins
Iron
Utility shears (optional, but helpful)

Cut a piece of felt to about 8-1/2 x 10 inches.

Print or trace the pattern onto the Sulky Sticky Fabri-Solvy or tracing paper, and then embroider the design through the material, centered on the felt. I used six strands and back stitch for the entire design (apart from the french knot to dot the "i". When you're finished, soak away the Fabri-Solvy or tear away the tracing paper.

If you've soaked the embroidery, allow the material to dry flat. You'll probably want to gently iron the felt.

Make sure your felt is trimmed nice and straight, then fold it in half vertically. Cut a diagonal line from the lower outside corner to about 2 inches up from the bottom along the fold. A rotary cutter makes this super easy.

This makes the little points on your banner, and there's nothing too precise about this. In fact, you could make the diagonal cut the other direction so that you have a point hanging down in the center. Make sense?

Now it's sequin time! I wanted mine to look like someone had just tossed some at the banner and they stuck that way. How did I do that? I randomly sprinkled the sequins on the banner while it was laying flat. A few of them landed in really bad spots (like on the embroidery, which I didn't want), but most had just the look I was going for. I took a pic with my iPad, and then used that as a rough guide for sequin placement.

To attach each sequin, I used 3 strands of embroidery floss in a blue that matches the felt. You can use glue or the traditional method of sewing these on with beads, but this method works well. Just make sure you have a needle that the floss will fit through, but that will also fit through the center of the sequins.

Come up from the back and thread a sequin onto the needle and down to the felt.

Wrap the floss on the needle two times, then poke the needle back through the sequin and felt. Basically, you're making a french knot that will hold the sequin in place.

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

See? Cute!

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

Stitch your sprinkling of sequins, and feel very pleased with yourself. If sequins aren't your thing, I'd recommend replacing them with french knots, perhaps in a color that will not compete with the color of your text.

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

Cut three 3-inch circles from card stock and use glue stick or a pin to attach them to the back of the fabric. Cut out around the circles, leaving a 3/8-inch allowance.

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

Stitch around the circle with needle and thread. Use a medium-length running stitch. Pull the thread to gather the allowance tight on the back, but without curling the paper inside, then tie a knot.

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

Iron the backs of the circles to flatten the gathered allowance, then remove the papers, fold the circles in half and iron them again.

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

Pin the three half circles along the top of the banner, sandwiching the felt in the circles. The fold of each circle should be about 1/2 inch up from the top of the felt, and the two sides will stick out slightly on the ends.

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

Stitch around the scallops with running stitch, making sure that you don't go past the felt. You'll want to keep the top of the scallops open so they form a hanging channel.

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

If you're using a large skewer, you'll need to cut the pointed end off. A utility shear is great for this.

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

Carefully slide the skewer through the scallop tabs.

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

You can also use the utility shear to make some little grooves in each end. These will help prevent the hanger from sliding off.

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

Cut a 16- to 18-inch piece of embroidery floss and tie it to each end of the skewer.

Now you can hang your banner and be reminded of all the newness. The newness? Sure. Let's go with that.

I AM Doing a New Thing Banner

Now, may I share with you the importance of this banner? Or at least how it came to be?

I'm still feeling this new year, and I probably will for a while. That's good and bad, I think. It might be artificial, but this is a time of lots of "new", and we hear that word a lot right now. It actually started to get to me and in a time that should be hopeful (A blank slate! A fresh start!), I nearly let it get me down.

The blogging world has been sharing all of their goals and their new things that they're working on. They look like they have it all together, and I have a feeling that a few of them actually do. I don't have it all together.

I have moments of doing things well, but most of the time I'm behind schedule, stressing, and starting emails with "I'm so sorry for the delay...". What new things was I going to be working on in this new year? I didn't know, and I couldn't even start to think about that, because it felt like a failure. And then these words:

"See, I am doing new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland." -Isaiah 43:19

They just sort of came to my mind and I nearly gasped. I don't need to worry when I'm not able to do new things in my life. God is doing new things as he always does, and that's far more than enough. Over the next week or so, even as I was stitching the pattern, I heard several other sources make reference to this verse and the new things God is doing and making.

So I'm hanging this banner where I'll see it every day. Because I just have this feeling that I'm going to need to remember every day that God is doing a new thing.

pattern // just stay calm

Just Stay Calm

A couple of weeks ago I shared some thoughts and feelings that have been on my head and heart, and you responded with such wonderful support. I want to thank you for that and let you know that things are okay around here. Not all better 100% positive happiness...but they're okay. And I'm okay with that.

I talked about the verse Exodus 14:14, and since then I've created a pattern with the words that I keep close:

The Lord Himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.

Just Stay Calm

When life overwhelms me (because it does sometimes!), knowing that God is taking care of things is the best reason and best way to stay calm. To quote the song, this is a blessed assurance.

If you're an embroiderer, you know that stitching can also have a calming effect, so pairing this scripture with embroidery is quite perfect I think. When I drew this pattern up, I decided to split it into two designs that work together. Use them together. Use them separately. It's up to you.

Just Stay Calm

I hope that stitching these words brings some peace into your life. It's something we all need more of.

pattern // I have always loved you

I Have Always Loved You Embroidery Pattern

I have always loved you.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to hear someone say this to you? Being human, it's difficult for us to say this and mean it. But guess what? There is someone who says this and truly means it. God.

These words are from Malachi 1:2, and they are spoken by God to His people, Israel. And those who love Him are welcomed into this family (in fact, Wild Olive is named so for a verse that talks about this!). But whether you believe and accept Jesus as God's Son, forgiver of all wrongdoing, God still says this to you:

I have always loved you.

With Valentine's Day close at hand, love is in the air. Or at least there are a lot of hearts in the air. As a single lady I choose to enjoy the talk of hearts and love, and think on a love that has always been. And that includes stitching it!

The design will just barely fit in a 6-inch hoop, so I'd recommend going just a bit larger. Try it in traditional Valentine colors or in shades to match your decor. Oh, and the pattern has the Scripture reference on there, but it looks great without it too.

And maybe, while you stitch, no matter who you stitch this for, think about the love that inspired this pattern.

Happy Stitching!

pattern: joshua 1:9

Joshua 1:9

I've seen a lot of people this year talking about bravery on their blogs. Fear is a big issue because it keeps us from things we could be doing...things we were made to do! Sometimes you don't even realize that it's fear that's holding you back. In this month of spookiness where people often seek out things to frighten them, I thought it appropriate to talk about fear, bravery, strength and courage.

I am not brave. I am not strong. I am not courageous. Not on my own anyway. If I tell you that "I've got this", I'm just putting up a front, because this life, this work...it's scary at times.

More times than I can count, the words "Be strong and courageous" run through my head. They're from the Bible, in Joshua 1:9, and they are what I need to hear every day. But again, if this is just me trying to be strong and courageous, it wouldn't work. Which is why there's more to that verse:

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."

There is no need to fear when the God who created everything and loves you more than anything is with you. With this knowledge, I can be brave.

autumn colors

So, let's talk about this pattern.

First, I set it up with the new DMC colors in mind...very autumn, yes? If you can't find this new color set, you can easily swap in other similar colors or something else entirely. Not loving the leaves or maybe you want to have this be less seasonal? Leave them off when you transfer/stitch.

I couldn't just do part of the verse, but it's pretty long for a single hoop. So I split it over different sizes of hoops so you can make a grouping...or just stitch the parts you want! For framing in hoops, I recommend these sizes, in order of the parts of the verse, 5", 6", 6", and 8".

If you stitch this or any of my other patterns, I'd love to see! You can add them to my Flickr group, or tag them #olivestitching on Instagram or Twitter!
