flashback friday: lightning bug hairpins

hair pins

Sometimes I like to look back on past posts. Today is one of those times. Two years ago, I made these teeny tiny hairpins that glow in the dark. It's a good time for me to pull out this post, because, well...I seem to have lost my pins! Here's the flashback:

These days, I hear people mention fireflies, and of course, they are so magical. But I always remember referring to them as lightning bugs. And I remember how amazed I was when I found out that they are not found in many parts of the world. They have always been part of summer, and spotting the first lightning bug of the year, or even the night is such fun!

So...yesterday, I bought some of this:

it glows

And I used it to stitch these:

YIP2010 - 178

(They are made with a french knot for the head, and detached chain/lazy daisies for the wings. Then I satin stitched the body freehand with the glow floss, and at the same time I was stitching this, I was attaching the felt piece to a bobby pin. Easy peasy!)

Now I can have glowy lightning bugs in my hair! I've made two so far, but I think I need more...

  1. Who knew they made glow in the dark yarn? And what a fun way to use it. You do need lots more!

    1. I think I bought it at JoAnn, but I think Michaels, and anywhere that sells a full range of DMC products should have it.

    1. I haven't played with them much either, but that's a great idea! I wonder how much extra hardware (battery, etc.) they require...would it fit and be hidden on a hair pin? Worth looking into!

  6. Very cute. I remember when I was little and learning about lightning bugs in Disney movies and kids books and so wishing we had them because they were not part of our summer!
