a little interview with kate

This week, I'm excited to present a short series (which may come back in the future!) of little interviews. These are some friends of Wild Olive and people you might like to learn a little more about.

Today, I'd like you to meet Miss Kate Gabrielle. She's the girl behind Flapper Doodle, which I love very much (I'm a fan of Audrey Hepburn, so she had me with this print!). She's also a fan of science and movies, and I always enjoy the things she shares on her blog and on Twitter. Now, here's a little interview with Kate.



Tell us a little about yourself and your favorite craft or medium.

I'm 24 years old, and I have two adorable cats, Chloe and Hypatia! I spend most of my time eating, doting on my kitties, blogging or working on my etsy shop, Flapper Doodle. I love working in acrylic, but since opening my shop in 2009 I've focused mainly on pen and ink drawing.



How long have you been drawing and painting, and where did you learn it?

I've been drawing in some form or another since I was old enough to hold a crayon, so I've just picked things up along the way. I didn't go to art school so I'm just kind of winging it as I go along! (I honestly have no idea what I'm doing. shh!)

Why is it important to you to draw and make the things you do?

Honestly, I am so used to doodling and making things that it's like breathing. I don't even think twice about why or how, I just kind of keep doing it, like a reflex. I do always hope that some people will look at my art and smile.. that is very important to me.



If you could learn a new artistic or crafty skill, what would it be?

I would love to be able to do really intense sewing projects. I've just started learning how to make dresses (simple dresses, I should add) but I'm absolutely in awe of people who can make very structured, detailed apparel. I highly doubt I'll ever achieve that level of skill, but I'm super determined!



What artist (alive or dead) would you most want to spend a day with?

Ooh, toughie!! Either Rene Magritte or Edward Gorey. They wouldn't even have to talk to me or acknowledge I'm there... I'd love to just sit in their studios and observe.
